I have the opposite issue, though I suppose it's only in my head: I always have the feeling from the that if you're not a singer/songwriter you're not a real musician, and so always feel I have to apologize for playing only covers. I only play covers because I know my limits. I'm not a songwriter and wouldn't want to inflict what I'd produce on myself, much less others.

Based on your op, I'd simply say I play originals that I write.
I'm in a band, so I tell them "I play instrumental surf music. If you know Pipeline, Wipeout or Hawaii Five O you know what I play. "
