Top five for me and I am in my late 30's so that tells you something about the influence he had. I love the way he wrote his songs based on such simple yet complex observations about nature, and then tied them to personal experience. A perfect example is Annies Song, which he came up with the basis of while riding a ski lift.

It isn't "Christmas" at our house until we have played "Rocky Mountain Christmas". John's music was pure - and that is what made it both enjoyable and powerful. In many ways he is an artist from a more innocent time.

Really enjoyed reading through this thread. The love for John Denver and his music shines through. While I'm just beginning to learn to play guitar, his music has always appealed to me. His lyrics are very honest and straightforward with a lovely purity and even naive quality. I love that. I never get tired of hearing his music. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts on this wonder artist who left us all too early.

By the way.
I googled "John Denver Forums" and found this place. http://www.johndenver.com/forums/index.php I joined. I hope some others here will also sign up. It would be fun to talk more about all things John Denver related, in a forum dedicated to his memory. See you there,

Well I became a fan in 1986 although was aware of him before....I went to 5 concerts all in a couple of weeks here in UK...including The Royal Albert Hall....it was these concerts that really turned me on to John....I started to learn guitar and trying to sing and still trying like 25 years later!...I do not find it easy it has to be said but keep coming back to it.I must have every album and cd versions including a couple of LPs from the Mitchell Trio days...Violets Of Dawn....etc....I think JD was very underrated esp later in his career...
I also keep an eye on messers Clapton and Knoffler can they play or what?...hope not bored anyone reading this.... |

I didn't care for John Denver when I was younger.
At 15 years of age when I took up the guitar, he wasn't cool enough for me. I much preferred Don Mclean and Jim Croce. But the older I get, the better a songwriter Denver becomes I found this clip - this performance got me to go and buy my first Denver Album at 16: 'I Want to Live'. https://youtu.be/_ZfNq6D8-eY |
