Black Bodied Acoustic Guitars
Hi All
I have seen some brand new acoustic steel string guitars for sale on Amazon, and some of them are totally black colour - neck, headstock and top, back and side. What material are these guitars made of? And how are their tones like compared to clear wood grain showing acoustic guitars. Will they age through time as other wood grained guitars? |

On Amazon they usually have brand names. Many black guitars are wood. But, I have two black guitars. One is wood, one is a carbon fiber. There are several manufacturers that make CF. RainSong, Journey Instruments, CA, just to name a few.

According to the description it is made of Catalpa wood.
Since it doesn’t specify, I’m betting it is laminate. As being Solid topped is a selling point, it is rarely omitted if the guitar has a solid top.

Other options
Gibsons are solid wood construction. Really, once you get past about $1,000 you won't find many guitars with laminate back and sides, and starting at about the $300 range you start getting guitars with solid tops, which is more important.
If you're looking for a cheaper acoustic guitar with a solid top, I would look into a Seagull Entourage or a Yamaha FG800 series. I've seen both in black and both can be had for $200-300. Apart from the laminate woods, the problem with guitars like the one you linked to (I started on one very similar) is they are never set up well and will cause you a lot of frustration. They can be set up decently, but unless you have the knowledge to do it yourself, you're looking at spending a good portion of the money you paid for your guitar to get it playable.

The other important thing to remember about shiny black guitars, whether acoustic or electric, is that they’re incredible fingerprint magnets. Any smudge or thumbprint is far more visible on a black guitar than just about any other finish.
Guitars with dark sunburst finishes will also show fingerprints more than natural finishes, but black finishes are the all-time champs for this. Recently some companies have begun making guitars with matte black finishes, and those are a LOT more practical for day to day and professional stage use. They look pretty cool, too, in my opinion. But if it’s a shiny black guitar that you have your heart set on, be resigned to the fact that you’re either going to need to polish it a lot, or else be content with a guitar that gets smudged up faster than the speed of light.... Hope that makes sense. Wade Hampton Miller |

The main disadvantage with gloss black finished guitars is polish swirls are very visible when light hit the surface at the wrong angle, especially if its a mirror finish. My Black Ovation Custom Legend (the best color) was looking rough however I restored it to 'mint' condition using this amazing stuff:

There's no way to know without reading the descriptions or going to the manufacturer's site and reviewing specs.
Tone will vary dependent on the make, model, woods. They shouldn't vary much, if any, from an otherwise comparable guitar with natural finish. Likewise, they should age similarly to their natural-finished brethren. |

--- But anyway you can make any guitar black just by tinting the finish. It's not necessarily indicative of a laminate guitar and the color has no affect on tone. |
