John Denver fans outthere?
As a singer/songwriter myself, I am always trying to learn from artists who have had great success and have a transcending longevity in the musical community. John Denver (R.I.P.) was one of those artists who still seems to keep capturing more and more audiences even though he has been apart from this world for some time. His views about the environment, politics and the innate intrinsic good that exists in all of humanity are so poignant and relevant to this day and age; especially with how things are going in the economy right now. If you’re an old or new John Denver fan, or even if you’ve just heard his name in passing, you should check out a new live release from him. “Around the World Live.” A must have for any collection. http://bit.ly/JDRockyLive I’d appreciate anyone’s thoughts as well

I play guitar because of John Denver.
His music is a big influence to me. I have been to the Aspen In October Gathering 3 out of the past 5 years. The gathering is going on right now. I wish that I could be there but it just wasn't good timming this year. There is also a CD of his trip to Russia where it is just him and his guitars. This is a great addition to any JD collection. I was a big fan of his through junior high school and high school (in the 70's). I started playing guitar after listening to him in 7th grade.
While I've become much more interested in other kinds of music over the years, JD still holds a special place in my musical heart.

I discovered John Denver very early in his career and enjoyed his music a lot. I still play his versions of "Mr. Bojangles" on the 12-string that I learned off his first album, which was mostly covers. I enjoyed his TV show, too, and appreciated the very positive role model he became. His "Poems, Prayers, & Promises" album was successful enough that more of the public started to learn about him.

John Denver is such a natural at playing and singing (and writing) that some tend to overlook it. He also had great stage presence and charisma. I mean how many folk singers end up in a major motion picture with George Burns?
I still play "Take Me Home Country Roads" at my shows and though some think it's a tad hokey- i think it's one of the best songs ever- and the audience response (usually very loud) tends to support my theory  Mike

I am HUGE John Denver fan and he is the very reason I finally learned to play the guitar. I had wanted to play the guitar ever since I was younger but never had the discipline. In 1982 at the age of 19 I heard Rocky Mountain High on the radio after not hearing it for years. That opening riff sent a chill though me (it still does) and I just had to learn to play the guitar.
Ever since then I just devoured all of his music and went to see him every time he was in my neck of the woods. In 1994 I had the chance to meet him and had a nice chat with him. My dream had come true. I will be getting the new 5 DVD box set "John Denver, Around the World Live" for my birthday later this month!!! I can't wait!!!

I started playing guitar in 1971 at 16. I just figured out songs on my own, lots of Peter Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel and ....John Deuschendorf Jr. aka John Denver. I recently did a gig and at the end someone asked if I knew any John Denver, so I launched into a few. It was a big crowd pleaser. I love to fingerpick Lady. Played that many times to my "lady" over the years.
I tell my kids they have no idea how huge JD was back in the 70's and 80's. I will definitely pick up that 2 disc set. Those are alltime greats.

John Denver was the Man
I'll throw my two cents in also.
JD was my motivation to buckle down and learn to play guitar, as is the case from several posters on here. So there I was playing JD songs on my Yamaha classic guitar I bought from a pawn shop. His sound motivated me to get a steel string guitar, which was an Ovation Legend. Long ago. I saw 6 of his concerts over the years and the one that stood out most was in the South Shore Room at Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe. He did the celebrity ski thing each year at Heavenly Valley at the same time. I sat right at the edge of the stage directly to his left and below. He was occasionally spitting on me I was so close! I was so impressed by how smooth he was in playing and it was unconscious. He was so poised and calm like he was born to do exactly what he was doing. I committed to improving as a player after that night, and even today, watching him in the Wildlife Concert, I am still impressed with his stage presence (and young Pete Huttlinger too). I own the Taylor JDCM in a Grand Auditorium sized body, all KOA,in honor and to keep him more alive in my life. It is a work of art. I miss him still and play his stuff all the time and people surprisingly everywhere likes to hear it. There are lots of "closet" John Denver fans.

I too was/am a huge JD fan. Back in 1975 I visited Aspen, went and photographed his house, and called his mother Erma to tell her how much I enjoyed his music. I took some photos of JD at his concert back in 1983 at the Greek Theater (Berkeley, CA), one of which will be featured in the booklet in the new DVD set coming out. I met his brother Ron during a plaque dedication at "John's Beach" in Monterey/Pacific Grove a couple years ago. Whenever I pick up my guitar, no matter what mood I'm in for what kind of music, inevitably a JD song will come out before I put the guitar back down. To me, he wrote some of the most beautiful, meaningful songs of any popular song writer of our time.
