The tapping would work if the guitar you're tapping sounded better for that, Barry. it's a bit dead sounding, when you tap it. You want a deeper effect.

TB man It is not your personal technique or the recording, or the guitar used, that is the issue . It is the fundamental notion of tapping or thumping . While I am very much in the camp of resisting codified technique or being bound by tradition, etc. And I often like experimentation that yields interesting results . The monotonous technique of thumping tapping or whacking the guitar or strings is IMO (other than as an ocasiona highlight) is a distraction when continuous , and now has become very very cliche , quite tedious, and leads to significant increase in disinterest. Even in the Kishibe video , it quickly become ho hum and does nothing to enhance the performance ? There is a veritable galaxy of possible experimentation in techniques possible that are not tedious. So the answer is, yes all continuous tapping and thumping is annoying ...

Perhaps check out some Phil Keaggy videos. He strikes a nice balance between traditional fingerpicking and modern tapping.
Jon Gomm is way more severe ... however he has a YT video with a nice lesson about where on the guitar to tap to simulate various pieces of a drum kit which may be helpful. |

I like the song, but maybe tapping on the "dead" notes isn't that great of an idea, even in Daria's cover of it. I'm going to find a mp3 of Masaaki himself playing it and see what he does. I could just replace the tap with a muted repeat of the previous note, but very quietly.

Yes TB... When you said it was too loud, I jumped on it. I too think it's simply to loud.
Another reply said do it on the lower strings. Yes. It sounds Taylor bright.(forlackofabetterterm)

The guitarist in the video is frailing across the strings with the back of the fingernails to produce the percussive effect as stated above. Max Brant has a couple of good videos on YouTube demonstrating the technique. I’m not sure how to embed a video but type in Slap, Frail and Thump, Frailing 1 and it should get you to the first one. I think the videos are from a Truefire course.

i am not adverse to a bit of tapping in a song.
First off your title to the thread immediately made me want to focus on the tapping. So of course it was in my mind to think it might be annoying even before i heard it. ha the power of suggestion. so in the recording it was too loud and inconsistent. tapping as a rhythmic effect should not be too up front in the mix. and it's rhythm so it should be there on every beat. |
