Try the free version of ProTools, to see how you like it. I saw the $$ version being used a lot in Nashville studios last year.

For around $700 you can get MOTU's 826 with 2 mic pres and no meters, ADAT I/O, AudioDesk, more in 1 rack space. http://www.motu.com/ http://homerecording.about.com/libra...aapr041602.htm Your $100 limit is a little out-of-line with your $3K laptop IMO! Unless you just want to "play." |

You can check Digi design's Mbox. It includes Pro tools and it runs for less than $500.

I'm using Emagic's Logic Audio on my Tibook with their EMI 2/6 interface. I would recommend this if you do any MIDI recording as Logic's midi is great and I really like their software instruments including the ES1 synth, EVP88 electric pianos and EXS24 sampler. The Rhodes sounds and responsiveness in the evp88 are great.
If all you're doing is recording audio, any of the aforementioned packages are fine but there aren't many choices for under $100. Protools free is popular but I've heard of problems with hardware compatability and latency can be a problem also. A company called Griffin makes a USB interface called the Imic that is about $30 and can be used with Protools free. Although I've heard it can be glitchy and latency is high. I thought smackintosh went out of business 5 years ago.
I think they went out of busines because the Ismack didn't have enough smackajuice to compete with other pc's. Maybe if they just laid down the smack, stopped smoking smack and smack the smack who makes the smack smack they could have a smack that would smack. Congrats on your smackintosh...oh...what was this thread about?

We've been Mac nuts since '83 and have never had a virus, a coupla crashes maybe, but all around the way to go for us! Not the best at everything, but no real complaints. Now if I can just move from the "788" to the 'puter....

I have a MAC at home and I'm using Pro Tools Digi001. They are coming out with ver 6 around year end which will run on OS X, so I would expect the free version of Pro Tools would be following close behind on the OS X thing.

Another vote for the free version of ProTools.
