Were you both using the same strings except for the gauge?

Have a 000-28 and personally would not advise above the light or light/medium gauge. He could put heavy gauge on it and it won't explode, but he will hasten the onset of top distortion, bridge stability, neck problems.

As long as he understands potential consequences, including warranty issues if it was bought new, use whatever suits.
