Default Mid '60s Martin question

Hello all, wanted to ask a question to the Martin experts out there. Just wondered what sort of nut width / neck profile would you expect to find on a circa '65 00018/D18. I'm guessing 1 11/16 nut but have been told it could vary between this and 1 3/4. I've also been told a D profile would probably be the most popular during this time and wanted to get an idea of profile.

As a yardstick, the previous profile and width of the Standard series guitars fits me perfectly.

Any help appreciated.

Nut width 1 11/16". Most of the 60s D-18s I've played had a neck carve very similar to the pre-2012 D-18, maybe slightly meatier.

I have a'62 D-18 and it's very comfortable even with the 1 11/16" nut. I always prefer 1 3/4" spacing but have no issues with this one? The neck profile feels more like rounded C without a lot of the V as you go up the neck like the "Mod-V" profile. It' feels a little thicker than the MLO but because it's also less wide than the 1 3/4" it's very comfortable too me?

They were hand carved and shape varies some, but it usually pretty consistent for a given period. For example a 57/58 era neck is little thinner in first position and often has more V-shape than something from 64/65. If you play enough of them you notice the trends. So they are not all the same, but it is not random either.

Unlike shape, width varies almost none. You will not find one of these that is anywhere near 1 3/4". In fact, you won't find width varies more than about 0.010" on average.

There were no optional shapes, but as I said above, the shape varies some with the period. Consequently there were no named neck shapes as we have today.
Most of them are what I'd call C-shaped, sometimes with a subtle V but most often not. Thickness in the first position is similar to the modern Low Profile, but gets considerably thicker as you move toward the heel. Generally they have a fuller feel than than most modern neck shapes. I find most vintage 1 11/16" Martin necks very comfortable.

Well, I took the plunge and bought a '65 D18 from a reputable dealer here in the UK.

Haven't had chance to play or even handle it and have only seen pictures but looks good. UPS delivered today and I'm awaiting the work bell to toll before I can give it a try.

It's had a neck set apparently and saddle looks good from the photos (straight thru rather than drop in) so maybe it's a little earlier than a '65, a transitional or replaced bridge. Anyway, there is a generous returns policy. Possible NGD thread on the way !!!
