Capo collisions

Mostly I never use a capo; I want all the notes on the neck, all of them, mine!

But, I've got two songs in my duo where me with a capo on either 5 (play D) or 7 (play C) gets the sound we want and the constant bumping into the corner of it on my first finger disrupts my delivery and just plain annoys me throughout the songs.

I have a Shubb Capo.

My usual approach of resolving annoyance through meditation isn't practical on stage.

Other Ideas?

Where is the collision? Certainly not the top of the capo. Have you tried flipping the capo around? So that the frame is at the low e string side of the neck?

I use a Shubb and that's how I position mine for the least interference...

You could also try setting it at a slight angle, just enough to stop the annoyance. I have to do this on some tunes when capo'd well up the neck and things get a bit tight for room.

I usually clamp my Shubb on from above, for this very reason, so there's nothing in the way beneath the neck.

Even so, with capo on 7, I'd be playing some chord shapes with my hand approaching from behind the capo - such as E, and particularly B7.

This is one of the reasons I stopped using a Shubb.

I solved that problem for me by putting it on the other way 'round.

Planet Wave NS and back a bit off the fret when extra room required.

I don't use a capo, but I do meditate. But not while playing, although playing guitar is somewhat meditative.

I think Pete Townshend's approach to resolving annoyance on stage was to smash his guitar. Do you have any cheap guitars you no longer need laying around?

Try a G7th capo - smallest profile capo out there so it doesn't interfere, and it performs very well. Also try installing your capo at an angle so that it's further away from the fret at the higher strings. You may need a little more pressure to get away with this - you'll want to readjust your tuning.

I use the G7th at an angle all the time and I'm never bothered by "collisions"
