As sdelsolray mentions above, going up the scale with the Zoom recorders brings lower self-noise as the primary benefit. Build quality goes up as well.
The H1 is at about the same level as the original H2. H4 is a bit better for noise, adds multitracking and XLR input - but with limited headroom on the line input. H2n improves the user interface, headroom, and self-noise over the H2. H4n does about the same for the H4, but still limited headroom for line in. H6/H5/H4nPro improve self-noise to about the performance of a decent consumer audio interface. The H5 and H6 have built-in pads so there's finally enough headroom for normal mixer tape outs.
