Awesome story!

Reminds me of how a Marine found his Marine father's WWII MI Garand rifle (50+ years later), and presented it to him on his birthday. The old man wept like a child. It was great!

That stuck with me ever since and I got myself a Gurian as soon as I could find one. I also met and spoke to Michael a few years ago at NAMM.
Its a very special guitar ('77 J-M), different to any other I have owned or played.

So, Slothead, I wish you all the best in finding yours. It might be a long shot, but who knows?
AFAIK only around 4000 Gurians were ever built, and only some were J-R models, so I guess its not like you're looking for one Martin or Gibson in a million.
These days, the seemingly impossible doesn't take quite as long as it used to
All the best to you and your Gurian!

Look up "serendipity" in the dictionary. This story will (should) be in the definition!

Great story; congrats!

That guitar was just biding its time waiting to get back to you.

This is so great to hear! I wish I had more information about my Grandfather's old resonator my idiot brother pawned back in Wisconsin. After he got it after my Grandfather died, he tried to sell it to me but I didn't have the money so he pawned it.

If anyone in the Kenosha Wisconsin area has an old Resonator (perhaps National brand?) they got from a pawn shop about 15-20 years ago, I'd love to see it. It's beyond a long shot but what the heck...

Best,
PJ

Congrats on getting your Gurian back. My boomerang guitar story falls way short of yours....

Hi Slothead,

I think this is an AWESOME story! I can very much imagine what it means for you to get that guitar back in your hands! How wonderful for you!

It was so simple in design and had a thundering thumpy bass and crystal clear highs--it was exactly what my ears wanted. Had this cool 'Earth, third planet from the sun' label on the inside.
Happy NGD to you, and thanks for sharing the story. Just this past weekend, I contemplated selling my Gurian Jumbo Rosewood Herringbone that I bought about the same time as you. I made the mistake of playing it, and once again have considerable misgivings about letting it go. Mine has a F.R.A.P. GP-100 pickup system, and the bracing was tweaked by Ervin Somogyi in the early '80s. It remains a pretty amazing guitar after almost 40 years.

I'll have to check my guitar's serial number just for grins.

Be well,

George

To me, this is a great story.

As many on this forum and UMGF know, my first guitar was a vintage 000-28. My memory is fading, but it was given to me Christmas '63 or '64. I always thought it was 1949, but not absolutely certain. I was about 13 years old.

In 1971, I traded it for a later D-28. I know my 000 was again traded (in 1973 or so?), to McCabe's in Santa Monica, for an old D-18 they sometimes referred to as their "house guitar" .

I'd love to have that one back, but the records of serial number and closeup photos perished when my folk's house burned. Not a chance of tracking it down, but it's out there. Typical case-latch ding, some strumming wear near the fretboard, pretty generic memories of it. At that time, it was in an old dark brown alligator archtop D size case that was literally twisted a bit. I think it was a Lifton. Probably far easier to track the case than the guitar.
