Default Blackbird

After buying and selling the CA Cargo 3X, I yesterday purchased a Blackbird 'Lucky 13'.
COMPLETELY IMPRESSED!!
Although I liked the bass response from the Cargo, to me, it had a 'feel' I did not like. But I wanted a travel guitar that would 'take it'. Hence the 3X purchase.
What I like about the "13" is both the feel and the response it offers: Smaller '00' size, 13 frets, clear trebles and strong bass. And it comes with a gig bag.
Excellent addition to my stable.
The main reason for the need is to take to beach and play. As I live in Hawaii, the beach is a place I often go. Playing there is wonderful as there are wide expanses where there are no people. I can be 'creative' and no one hears but me. And......I can leave in gig bag and catch a few waves without the guitar being fried by the sun.
Seems like a good fit, ya?

Love it. Might have bought one if I had a chance to play it. Settled on a Shorty with no regrets. Still remain very curious about these

The combination of 3 soundholes provides a uniquely satisfying tonal experience for the player, and the L13's are more comfy than a worn pair of leather slippers. Congratulations on a really exceptional instrument. I am getting one from LAGS soon.

I think the L13 has very pleasing bass for its small size.

I play my Rider on the beach - people ask "What is it?". Good luck with your Lucky 13 and enjoy the sunshine!

I went with their steel-string Rider not long ago -- their even more compact travel version -- and love it. I'm sure you're going to love yours too; I've read nothing but great.

That's a fine looking instrument. How hard is it to find a proper hard case that fits?

It comes with a awesome well made gig bag. You could get a hard shell case but why?

Because I would never keep something that expensive in a Gig Bag.

Glad to hear that the Lucky 13 was an upgrade for you, Kupuna. I was at the Reno Uke Fest back at the first of the month, and Blackbird was an exhibitor. I was really hoping to play a Lucky 13, and was prepared to buy, but they didn't bring one. My bad for not calling ahead, I guess. The founder, Joe, said that they have a 14 day trial period, and only get back a few (less than 1%).

But with two Rainsongs and a CA Cargo for the wife, we are pretty well set for CF guitars. Maybe someday on the Lucky 13. My black cat is named Lucky, appropo of nothing.

A few years back we sold a CA GX to a client who decided to take it with him to NY. It was too large to carry on in the hard case, so the client checked it with luggage. As you can imagine the guitar took a beating, by the time he got back to LA the case was pretty much destroyed but the guitar inside was still mint. The hardshell case di exactly what it was designed to do.

Kept various cheap, all-laminate guitars on my boat in the Pacific northwest for years. Never had a problem. Still decided, for some reason, to get a Lucky 13 for that use. Very nice to never have to worry about it; sun, rain, hot, or cold. It's a great guitar for fingerstyle.

I also have a Rainsong parlor that's my main gigging guitar. Compared to the parlor the Lucky 13 seems big. That said though, I have a Calton case that is slightly roomy for the parlor and the Lucky 13 fits okay. My guess is that, knowing the dimensions of the Lucky 13, it would not be hard to find a hard case if you felt like you needed one.

Like Ted's story, I have a GX which has traveled extensively and I always check it. The hard case has had some pretty bad knocks and damage but the guitar is unscathed.
Back to Blackbirds, I always really liked the Lucky 13 - I would have purchased one over my GX had they been available at the time. I had a play of their new El Capitan which I also liked a lot - now if they do a Lucky 13 in Ekoa, that would be something. No, there are no plans for this that I'm aware of.
