Maybe. The Cargo is an exceptional instrument. I don't know if it's worth what Peavey thinks it's worth. but it is a worthy instrument. Period.

My first Cargo was $699...my second was a sunburst for around $800. Personally wouldn't pay more than that for one, but the thing is...they've gotta cost what they've gotta cost.

The Cargo's I played in the past did not really speak to me tone wise. Had I purchased one it would have been purely based on the ergonomics. Glad I waited till later and now have a Rainsong Parlor, which I consider a high value for price instrument.

I have a raw and a sunburst gloss from the Cargo line. Great instruments but I think the new price will kill the line and perhaps the brand. Sort of a shame. I also have a GX and a dread both in the very rare woodburst finish, and I had been thinking about selling all my CA guitars (all pre-Peavey) I think with this price increase I will keep them and see what happens. I will be surprised if the brand survives very long. They are great guitars in my book.

Think the brand is in a tuff place price being only one issue, to me the lack of continued innovation shows lack of commitment to the line. Other makers continue to bring new models.

Is there any real difference in the old vs the new? (besides $$)

I am with you Ted. CA was incredibly innovative and risk-taking. Peavey has done a nice job in refining what CA created, but in the process left the lead to Blackbird, Emerald and Rainsong, relative to innovation. I think the CA/Peavey instruments are still remarkable and worth having, the general line seems to not have much of a future. Very sad.

IIRC in the period after CA closed & before Peavey picked them up, used Cargos were selling on eBay for 1200 -1500. Unique situation I guess.
I sold both my pre-Peavey no-issues Cargos last year - guess I missed out on the upcoming profits! Kept my Emerald T8 - mainly because it's too unique a finish. |
