Here is a tip for some of the other builders on this forum though you may already be aware of this? I've been using "Friskit Film" for several years to mask off the bridge and fingerboard extension gluing surfaces. The film is .001" thick and provides a great gauge to see how your finish is building on the guitar.

The finish has cured for 14 days and its time to level sand and prepare to buff. I dry sand with 1000 grit to remove the orange peel. Then I wet sand with 1500 and 2000 grit prior to buffing.

This part of the process is so amazing. Reminds me of soaping up in the shower. Just doesn't seem right for a guitar.

LOL. Actually I do use soap, a couple cap fulls of Murphy's Oil Soap, mixed with water, in a spray bottle. While prep sanding before buffing begins, we use such fine grits of sand paper, the soap acts as a lubricant and carries away the ultra fine particles of finish. If you tried sanding dry, with these fine grits, the finish will clog up the sand paper in a couple of seconds.

Thanks Louie. Yes, our final sanding is done with a 2000 grit Mirka "Abralon" foam backed sanding pad. The 1000 and 1500 grit sand paper discs are 5" Mirka.

Next, it's off to the buffer:
If I'm not mistaken this Cartright might be from the Bonanza ranch: |

Yowza! I don't recall seeing grain that beautiful in the eastern black walnut you had stashed in the wood room (aka, the holy of holies ), Tim. You hiding the goods from me?!?
Not a dread fan as you know, but that walnut with the sinker top is gorgeous. Even the rosette has a subdued, rich look to it. Eager to see it at McJam X! |

Its time to remove the Frisket film and attach the neck and bridge. I first scribe the outline around the perimeter, through the finish, using a sharp scalpel.
Then peel the finish and Frisket film off leaving a nice clean bare wood surface to glue to: Then add Hot Hide Glue and clamps: |

Ahhh, you make it look so clean and easy, but alas, I know it is not! Looks great!
Will you and Mary be in Memphis this June?

Thanks for the kind words Tom. Yes, Mary and I will be exhibiting in Memphis and I hope you will come by our table and introduce yourself. Our daughter Adrianne will also exhibit with us. We have a couple projects planned that should be quite interesting...
