String suggestions
Although I am not familiar with that model, I looked at some photos of it on Google. Dreadnought, spruce top, but no idea what the back and sides are made of. It's an inexpensive guitar, so they are probably laminate. This is OK, Yamaha makes quite nice guitars.
I would recommend Martin medium-light gauge SP4150 phosphor bronze strings. They will sound good and will last a long time. |

If you like the sound of the original Yamaha strings, D'Addario EJ11 sound similar, but in my opinion, better. EJ16's sound just a little less bright, but last a little longer. Just my personal favorites, but they're economical enough to try out.

I put John Pearse Silk and Steels on mine. They are very soft and great for fingerpicking.

I don't think you could go wrong with D'Addario EJ16's. Although I am presently trying Martin SP Lifespan 80/20's, and I like them, but it's a different sound from the EJ16's. The EJ16's are very bright at first but "mellow in" after about three days.

That is an amazing string set - Russ, nice pull. SP3150 is the Martin counterpart in 80/20.

I've got a Yamaha FG730S and use MSP4100 Martins on mine. They sound really good, but I'm sure the MSP4150 Martins would sound just as good, if not better. BTW, I tried D'Addario EJ-16s..........didn't like 'em on the Yamaha.

I could almost assure you, you won't like those either. I tried 'em and thought they sounded worse on my Yamaha than the ones that came on it. But, that's JMO. YMMV.

If you are worried about brightness I would try the John Pearse PBs. I found the Ef16 too bright and the JP were slightly mellower.

Agreed here - EJ16 or any D'Addario string will be very bright and very un-mellow, as D'Addario is built for strength and cutting through mixes. If a certain guitar is dull, lifeless, or the player likes treble, that's when D'Addario is a superstar. The beautiful strings include:
Newtone Masterclass Thomastik-Infeld Pyramid Western Folk Martin SP There are others. Good hunting. |

I use John Pearse 600 p/b lights on my FG730s. Very similar construction, may sound good on yours too.
