Default Bungled Binding

I finally got set up at home with a binding jig, router, and bits! Woohoo!

So I tested it out on an old birch parlor with painted-on binding -- sweet! Nice clean lines. Very precise cut.

My confidence boosted, I went for the Big Cut. My newly X-converted Harmony H162.

Oops. The "rider" on the jig wasn't quite wide enough, so it dropped into the existing purfling channel, which caused my binding channel to be a bit too deep....

So, I fixed it. And how I have a channel for 8mm tall binding and 5mm wide purfling.

How would you fill the chasm? The original binding was tortoise shell with a narrow wbw purfling.

I have some 6mm tall tortoise shell. I'm thinking that I should just add a bunch of wbwbwbwbwbw.....

Yes, I think I need to make some wbw for the sides.

I think the top purfling might work if I can find one more white line. I don't like the black line next to the spruce.

Maybe some herringbone.

Have you seen the red and green? Don't do green. I'm not sure where it's sold.

The old CFox guitars used a lot of colored purfling. Not sure how they made it. Maybe stained maple?

I like the blue:

Try flamed maple. I had the same oopsie on both the top and the back of my first build. Too many BWB lines looked like a musical staff going around the perimeter of my guitar so I tried finding an alternating hue but the colored purflings just seemed too gaudy. Granted my top is cedar so the color is duller than spruce but the maple really popped against it and I liked the subtle flaming texture too.

I really messed up the ledge on the back so I had to fill in even more space. I ended up using TWO strips of maple flanking a fine BWB strip with two bold BWB strips on the outside borders:

I don't think they rip on a saw. I'd guess they start with veneer sheets and then score. At least, that's my plan.

I like the idea of maple.

I wish the local Ace carried variety packs of purfling and veneer sheets. It's slow and expensive to get this stuff one piece at a time.
