Do You Ever Get Anxiety When Recording?
I don't know what it is but sometimes I get really tense when I know I'm being recorded. Anyone else experience this or have some tips to deal with it?

A swallow of bourbon does the trick for me.

Absolutely - having the performance down cold helps a great deal, as does getting a lot of exposure to being recorded or performing for others.

I'm completely at ease when recording at home. It's one of the most enjoyable aspects of being a musician.
Usually in someone else's studio I'm okay too, but if there's a difficult personality producing I can get kind of stressed out. I've seen one in particular who was erratic, sweaty, and temperamental. Luckily he sold his studio. |

No. No stress whatsoever. However, 30 years ago, plenty. You'll get over it.

It gets better the more you do it. I feel like you need to start all over again if you take a long break.

I always have a little stress while in a studio, especially when the clock is ticking at $150 an hour.
What works for me is being fully prepared before heading in, both musically and financially. Also, having a good producer and a solid engineer takes some of the stress away.

I have only been playing around 4.5 years.
I have about 35 songs of varying technical degree memorized. I decided to make my own CD with my Zoom recorder to listen to while driving. Not a chance. Songs that I never make mistakes on just seem impossible if the Zoom is turned on. |

I get this. I deal with it by recording some practicing. Also I will record several run throughs of the same song at one time and just keep the best one.

30+ years of recording and I definitely get "red light fever." I think the question should be, does anyone not get it?

Yes, I resemble that! It's gotten better over the recent years and I always plan a LOT of time and a lot of takes on an evening that I record, but seem to tap out after around 2+ hours. I usually have my equipment/recording area in our dining room set up for a period of a few weeks at a time when I feel I'm ready to record some songs and having that already to go takes away some intensity.
If I think back to recent recordings that have been successful, it's when I'm really warmed up and am able to overcome "the red light" and just go for it. Often this can be with an alternate song that I go for when taking a break from what I was originally recording, so I usually plan to be ready with two or three songs so I can shift if one isn't working too well at a certain moment. Also, I don't "punch in" or splice from different pieces, so I always go with the best single live take on a song. Approaching practice this way does help in knowing that you'll do the full song for any given recording.
