The Martin Grand J12-40E Special listed here in Australia for $7299.00.
Some time around 2010/11 Martin Guitars changed distributors here and for some reason some dealers/stores didn't meet the new distributors requirements and they lost their Martins. They sold off all their 'existing stock' Martins at reduced prices. I paid $4500 which was $2799 less than the same guitar at a music store near me that had maintained their Martin dealership.(and refused to budge one single dollar on the $7299.00 price)

I bought my 1963 Martin 0-16NY for $340 in 1984. Even with about $300 into it for a new bridge and tuners, it's still the best deal I ever got, and the last guitar I'd ever sell.

I bought a Voyage Air VAD - INA dread that had a snapped neck above the hinge. Absolutely mint condition otherwise. I repaired the break and can barely find it myself. Great guitar. $78.00 total inc shipping.

Brand new Taylor GA-3 from Sam Ash for $839 total out the door. No tax, no shipping.
MSRP was $1,548. There is presently a used one on Reverb for $845 plus shipping. I got a brand new Taylor GA-3 for a used price. Kinda nice!!

In 2010 I went to the PRS Experience and while there, I was able to secure a Private Stock Violin guitar (so named because the top wood came from the same forest from which Stradivarius selected his wood) for $7,200. I gave it to Ted at LA Guitar Sales last month on consignment and it sold this month for about $15,000, which netted me $12,000. I had no business buying that guitar in the first place but it turned out to be the best deal I ever got on a guitar.

I got a Martin D-18 GE right here on the forum for $300. The peghead was broken off, the neck was broken out of the body, with lots of cracks in the sides. Took a lot of time to fix, but it's an incredible sounding and playing guitar!

1999, $600 for a 1960 Gibson J50 in unplayed condition on eBay. It did need a neck reset, but other than that, it looked nearly new.

Didn't happen to me but a dealer in a nearby town scored a prewar 000-45 Martin for $15 because it had someone's name written in red paint on the top, needless to say he never was one of my favorite people - there used to be a lot of folks in the vintage trade doing that sort of thing. Guy I worked for in a pawn shop in late 1970 got a pre-war D-28 for $50 and sold it to a vintage dealer for the whopping sum of $500. I bought a '58 'burst Les Paul when I had my retail store (I think it was about 1979) for $265 and sold it to a vintage dealer friend the next day for $800 and I think he sold it to Gruhn. Wish I had all the neat old guitars I had back in the day. Music store I worked in from '70 to '75 had a left handed LP Custom 'fretless wonder' with the square magnets hanging on the wall for $150 - couldn't give it away. My first electric guitar in 1964 was a '60 double cut LP Jr. with cardboard alligator case - cost my parents the whopping sum of $75.

In 2009 I saw on this forum a thread about a "Stupid deal of the day" on MF.
A recently discontinued Takamine model EAN40c for $499. These had been retailing for just over $900. Called my daughter's guitar teacher and he said this was a Japanese made guitar and I should jump on it. There was a sale code also listed in the thread and I got this thing shipped to my door for $399. Killer guitar and my daughter still has it. They were sold out that same day. |
