Default Serena Williams - greatest athlete of all time?

Some are suggesting Serena is the greatest athlete of all time. Clearly she's the greatest female tennis player and possibly the greatest female athlete, but not the 'greatest athlete. If aliens came to earth and cgallenged us to a game if whatever, I'm taking Bo Jackson, Larry Bird, Jim Brown, but no NASCAR guys or soccer players.

The greatest "(whatever)" is a silly premise altogether.

The best ever was Babe Zaharias because she excelled in so many different sports.

I still remember watching that game where Bo streaking down the field takes on "The Boz", runs right through him. Scores the TD and keeps running right into the tunnel.

A classic!
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack. Serena is a great player, but who knows if she can do anything else. Remember Martina Navratilova, she was practically unbeatable when she was on her game.

I would say no because she is a single sport athlete, although great. For single sport I would go with Michael Jordan. Go Jackson gets pretty high list I would probably have to go with Dion Sanders. Still, the greatest athletes are decathaletes. So don't forget Bruce Jenner.

Thumbs up

John Mcenroe says she'd be the 700th ranked mens player
The best ever was Babe Zaharias...in the "modern" age.

She's definitely a World Class Athlete for the Ages. She happened to play tennis because her dad had a plan. She would have been world class in any number of sports.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and posit that the best of the American Ninjas (or foreign ninjas) would rank among the best athletes. Athletes in more traditional sports have enhanced specific abilities; but the ninja competition measures strength, agility, balance and endurance in very unique ways with no room for error. Theirs is clearly not a money sport, but their more generalized athletic prowess continues to amaze me. While the ninja athletes train on some obstacles that they may encounter, new challenges are constantly utilized that they've never seen or attempted previously; and in my opinion that requires a much higher level of athleticism than hitting, throwing, catching or serving a ball such as the athlete has done thousands of times before....

Is the greatest athlete of all time the one who dominates a competitive sport with a degree of separation that is unequaled? Is it the athlete who excels in more sports at an elite level than anyone else? Or is the greatest athlete of all time something else entirely?

You might consider cross-country skier Marit Bjoergen as a top female athlete. She has been skiing for Norway since 2000 and is still racing. Last year she came back midway through the season after having a child and still finished 2nd in the distance category and 5th overall. She has the most individual wins w/107 , most sprint victories @29, 10 Olympic medals, 15 world championship golds (10 individual) and 172 podium finishes overall. She has competed at both sprint and distance races and is the all-time leading x-c woman in history. Anyone who has every tried this activity knows that it is a brutal test of endurance and strength, so I feel that Marit certainly deserves consideration as the best woman athlete ever.
