New guitar question about binding
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and just bought a Taylor 410e-R. Love the guitar bit have one question. I sported a little line on the binding on the back of the guitar. My question is: is this just the looks or a mini crack? I've added a picture. It's really small and only seen in the binding. Can't feel it. Kind regards https://ibb.co/ma06Sk |

Hi I agree - it's poor workmanship- but - just the join. of one piece of binding has to meet somewhere.

I don't consider it "poor workmanship". It is just what it is. These things are human made and are never perfect if inspected close enough. Enjoy your new guitar.

It's normal; not a crack, not a flaw, just a typical binding joint.

I have one more question:
I've found three places where it looks like scratches under the finish. Any thoughts? https://ibb.co/ds7d8Q https://ibb.co/fsnBTQ https://ibb.co/i03UF5 |

I'm surprised that the fit and finish has those issues.
Taylor is fastidious about such things. I would definitely contact Taylor and discuss it with them. None of those issues are big problems - just minor cosmetic imperfections. I would find the size of that binding seam to be unacceptable and three marks under the finish is way too much little tiny issues. I've had many Taylors pass through my hands and I've never found one with poor fit and finish in any area. I may be over-reacting, but having four tiny quality issues is so U-Taylor-like that my initial thought was "counterfeit"

Quit looking so close and enjoy playing the thing.

I'm pretty sure almost all guitars with binding have that. My D-18 does. Don't worry about it.

Mineral deposits in the pores of the wood. I buy Martin wood rejected for the same reason and remove the deposits before finishing.

I agree, it could be mineral deposits or maybe even pore filler. Is the surface smooth to the touch? This isn't exactly an 800-900 series Taylor here; rosewood is an "upgrade" from ovangkul in the 400 series and IIRC it isn't even an upcharge.
Barring any tactile flaws (such as evidence of a crack) I would accept it as "character" and play the thing knowing that at some point it's going to get scratched. As far as I'm concerned, guitars are tools first and works of art a distant second. I'm also not one to sell off guitars either though. I play what I got and tweak it so that it fits me.

Binding doesn't come in a loop that will perfectly fit the guitar ... it's a straight piece and has to join the other end somewhere. At the heel is the least noticeable. There's nothing wrong with your guitar, or it's build quality. Go play.
