Calloused finger tips?
After two weeks of daily practice (sometimes quite painfully), my finger tips are developing callouses and I'm quite happy! My question is, will these callouses remain as long I continue to play daily? Will they peel off, having to start the process over? Is there a maintainance to caring for the callous? Sorry for the simplistic questions. Thanks for any replies.

Lol funny questions. I've never thought of it at all, I just play.
I will say this, occasionally they will peel (at least mine do), and I find myself picking at them... but the best thing to do is take a nail file and sand them down if they start to flake off. Picking can become painful. |

Yes, the leather on your fingertips will remain as long as you continue to run them over guitar strings. They may peel in small areas from time to time but nothing to be concerned with. I use one of those abrasive nail sticks to rub down high spots and generally keep them in shape. Massaging a little hand lotion into them once in awhile before bedtime will keep them more supple......still leather-like but flexible.....and it does help reduce peeling.

Callouses.
The more you play the tougher they'll get. You may have to shape or smooth them with a file or emery board every once in a while.
The only time I remember mine peeling off is if I go a week or so without playing . |

When I was a kid I played with heavy strings.... Yes, let that sink in. Then I got my Guild and my teacher said go with 13s. Talk about calluses...
Now. 40 years later I use custom lights 11s, or 11.5 and I still have calluses but normal ones.... Just take an emery board to them, try not to peel them.

After 30 years I think I no longer have nerve endings in my fingertips. Even when a callous peels off the finger isn't sensitive.

Keep playing. We've all been there. Eventually, won't even be an issue.

Forty five years of playing and I've never done anything to mine.

Everyone is a little different. Certainly don't peel off any skin, occasional emory board work is in order but go easy with it. Don't take off too much!
You really just want to get rid of the burrs. You need to go another 2 months before it really sets in on your fingers.

The worst thing I've experienced is the nerve that is in the vertex formed by the V-shaped grooves on the index finger. Every so often it gets aggravated and it will smart a little.
In the winter, the skin seems to fall off more. As others have said, keep playing and they will stay with you.

I used to file mine using plain sandpaper but on advice started using O’Keeffe’s Working Hands daily. A hard, firm, and smooth pad is still there, even with a dent but I've never had to sand them down since.

That callouses things eludes me.
40 years ago, I was playing quite a lot and I had callouses (normal), and occasionally I was peeling them when they were too thick. Eventually a bit of sand paper. I came back to guitar 10 years ago, and practice a lot, maybe even more. But the tips of the fingers stay supple, yes the skin is a bit thicker, but no callouses. Nothing become hard, nothing to peel. No pain either. So I conclude that there is also other factors than the mechanic action on the tips. Or something. |

The worst thing is the calloused fingers don't work very well on mobile phone screens. A modern-day problem!
