It happens to more guys than you think I guess...
I'm at the closest GC to my house with my wife and grandson. They're in the drum room so I'm there talking to my favorite salesman there. He's showing me this used 1969 Martin, and saying how much he loves it but can't buy it because his wife would kill him. (not much discount on a used instrument, even for employees). Then he proceeds to tell me about a few other guys that really liked other guitars there and said the same thing - "my wife would kill me..."
I think the best way to go is to do the one in/one out routine or have really big numbers on your W-2, lol.

Mistake number one......never take anyone with you to GC.
Wife will say no, grandson will tell on you. Always fly solo my friend.

Dr.Agave, I like your signature.
Since my wife's pension is bigger than mine, I have to involve her in every large expenditure. Fortunately, she is very understanding. |

Reminds me of the old bluegrass pickers' joke:
"Just got a prewar Herringbone for my wife - best swap I ever made..." |

My wife, who is self employed but still earns less than I, and I have separate bank accounts. Each of us is a co-signer on the others. But the point is, each has his OWN MONEY. We divide the bills to equal proportions so that each has an equal proportionate amount of disposable income. After that it's do as you please. I don't ask, she doesn't ask. If we want something and have the $, we buy it.

Be smart about it. Sounds like a nice guitar but you have a nice life going, and indeed have already made your (correct) choice.
Think of the opportunity cost: this is everything you DIDN'T get to do with the $$ you would be leaving at Guitar Center.

If you have a significant other, you're best telling him or her in advance before buying an expensive instrument.... Or be prepared to buy them something twice as expensive.
