I would like to add the very talented Australian luthier Chris Melville.Definately the finest guitar i have ever had the privelage to play was a Braz/german of his ,I was picking up my bourgeois OMS that he had done some work on,and was playing a Collings OM2H,after a few minutes he handed me the OOO braz ,one strum and i was hooked,it made both of the other guitars sound sort of ordinary just got to find a way buy it .Not cheap. .Tim

Though he's not currently building, Steve Klein's guitars would fall into this catagory.

As long as we're talking broad price brackets, I think this thread is well within our "no guitar price discussion" rule. Interesting, too!
I agree with what Paul Woolson said earlier. "Overpriced" is a very different concept to me than "expensive." It has a connotation that an expensive guitar is not worth the money. While that may be true for some people, the fact that many of these "expensive guitar" builders have a long waiting list would seem to indicate that those who buy them don't think they are overpriced. "Expensive" seems to mean any guitar that on, or beyond, the upper limit of what we might be willing to pay. For a 13-yr. old hoping to by his first guitar, anything over $300 might be "expensive" and "overpriced." For someone in their late twenties with a good job, that figure might have risen to, say, $1,800." A professional who earns a living in a recording studio might think a better limit would be ten times that much. Which is right? They all are! For this thread's purposes, Compurocker set the bar at $5,000. That's expensive to me, though not necessarily overpriced. If I could, I would gladly pay that for a guitar from quite a number of builders. One day, I'll commission my dream fingerstyle custom, and even without lots of expensive options, it might cost over $5,000, despite my frugal nature. I have to confess that our forum Sponsors will get first shot, out of appreciation for their support, and in recognition of the very high quality of the guitars they build. Plus, I don't think any of them have a base price of $20,000 - YET! cotten |

It's getting harder to find many established custom builders that don't start at close to $4000 + upgrades in todays market.
Even relatively new luthiers who have made only a handfull of guitars for few years are charging $3000-3500 base prices.

Since most of the guitars I own from these builders exceed the baseline entry point on this category, I would consider Kevin Gallagher and John Osthoff in the $5K range...
