one other point about converting a guitar to lefty...some people have told me that guitars are braced a certain way for lefty or right to account for string tension differences from bass strings to the treble strings. so that might be an issue although I defer this point to someone with more knowledge on this issue.

I own a Yamaha Guitar with a solid spruce top and it sound quite good for an under $300 guitar.

Yes, there's quite a lot more to do to convert a guitar from right to left, other than switching the strings around. The braces will need to be adjusted. Hopefully Homermav already knows this.

I highly reccomend the early FG's. I own a 1978 FG 335, And have played assorted Red and Tan label Yamaha's. I had a Red label twelve string in my possesion for a few months.

I love how the sound has matured on the guitar, And the action sits wonderfully. The tuners hold tune better than people give them credit for.

Good choice!! A real workhorse guitar, great!!

I found out by E-mailing Yamaha. They are fairly prompt with getting back to you.

I've seen 75's with Red labels and Tan labels, But never a black one. ARe you sure it isn't Tan with black font?

here's a link you can type your serial number into. have fun guessing which decade it is. i think it can be done with some sharp detective work.

I know nothing about South paw conversion, but I own a Nippon Gakki FG-75. It's an incredibly woody, and mid-rangy sounding small body guitar. Excellent for that Nick Drake finger picking sound. It's already a higher register sounding instrument, but I love using a capo with it. You can get a red label FG-75 for under $100 and are superb parlor sized acoustics.

As stated in my first post, I also have an FG-300 which sounds utterly majestic. I had a Taiwanese FG-200 which I loved also. Very compressed sounding strumming guitar.

I love old Yamahas and surprisingly they all sound very different from one another.

wow....ive been meaning to post about this for a while but last year (when I was still in high school) I found a vintage looking Yamaha FG-160 in the back corner of a closet in my music teachers room. my teacher just let me have it (she said it was in that closet for a looooong time). all it needs is a new nut and tuners....the label on the inside is cream with black lettering....i typed in the #s and its either a '72 or '82 model....is there a difference in the label colorings from these 2 years?

You don't have to adjust any braces if they are symetrically designed. You compensate the saddle for total left hand play (change it is better), change the nut and you are good to go. I did it for years. I finally got fed up and taught myself to play upside down. Now I play right handed guitars, ANY right handed guitar I want, but left handed!
