Getting old.
After playing a couple of hard/fast strumming songs, I find myself needing to rest. Hand/shoulder/arm pain! I understand more of the old adage....youth is wasted on the young.

I will just drop this link as a must read and suggest focusing on what you can still do, or could start doing differently. But this columnist said it so much better yesterday that it makes my suggestion seem trite. I found it helpful myself as I begin to recognize hearing loss that comes with age:

I hear you. Some days my thumb wrapped F chord isn't that great either.

I'm having another flare-up (osteoarthritis - fretting hand). Back to lap slide again.

Waking up with stiff fingers from a sudden doubling of playtime the last few months. I'm off to a 3 hour set right now. Thanks for the advil reminder.
Take it easy. Age gracefully. Maximize your musical enjoyment of your declining output. |

Once I strummed guitar so hard I got tendonitis that sidelined me for six months. I was 24 years old.
It ain’t all age. It’s also how often you play, and how. |

I always try to remember what my Mom told me 50 some years ago.
"Don't worry about getting old. Some people don't get the chance." |

I guess you should play more soft/slow finger picking songs. You won't get so worn out.

That is an inspiring quote. Your Mother must have been a sage.

I didn’t start playing until I was 63. Only good thing about that is that I don’t pine for the days when I was younger and played better.

Not much to add but the obvious: stretching helps. I try to remember to do this at times during the day, and definitely before playing, and it helps a lot. But yup -- stiffness and pain are a drag.
