Congrats to the US and Canadian girls for a great game.
But, reverting to penalty shots to determine such an important outcome undermines the moment imo.
I can maybe understand it in soccer, where the score could literally remain 0-0 for three days, but in hockey?
No.
There's nothing as thrilling as sudden death overtime. If the first OT ends up in a tie, go the next one. Leave it all out there to get the gold.

I really enjoy the Summer and Winter Olympics. I’m not otherwise a huge sports fan.

I do tend to be opinionated as demonstrated by my belief that if a competition involves judges who are determining winners by how pretty the participant point their toes, this is not a “sport.” While I enjoy watching a little curling, this is clearly not a sport either. It’s a game.

I agree with others here that NBC has blown the coverage of this year’s games. I have a difficult time watching figure skating, especially pairs, without thinking of it as comedy. Try it sometime; it’s quite funny! During coverage of one particular male figure skater’s routine several days ago, one colorful commentator said “That’s what fairy dust looks like.”

Shoot out is a horrible way to end a hockey game.

+1, especially in a playoff game. At least the NHL doesn't do shootouts in the playoffs.

Congrats to the US Women's hockey team.

Very entertaining game, Canada and USA hockey, one of the great rivalries in sport. Congrats to all. Well done, Team USA.
- shoot out, not so much.

Thrilling game. I hate the shootout, especially the one-on-one. Yuck.

coverage-wise these are pathetically bad Olympics.

There were live events not televised while they showed the third replay of a different event.

Was insanely frustrating.

As well, I have no clue why South Korea even bid on this thing. All the important gold-medal events I watched (hockey, figure skating, cross country skiing, biathlon, etc) had empty stadiums.

Man if this were held in other Olympic country there wouldn't be an empty seat at ANY event - even qualifiers. The people there are very uninterested.

This reminds me of Sochi.

Horrible Olympics.

We need to get back to fantastic winter Olympics like Lillelhammer (that was the smallest Olympic town ever) and Nagano and Vancouver and Lake Placid. These were horrible (coveragewise and attendance-wise).

Every Olympics, NBC counts on their Olympic coverage to draw viewership to their other programming. For example, for years, NBC has lead the six o'clock news slot during the Olympics. This year, for the first time in twenty years, they lost that lead to ABC. The feedback this years is universally bad. However, apparently NBC has contracts on the Olympics through 2032. Oh, no.

Because now it's not just "South Korea" -

it's

"South Korea - as seen on TV!"

Can't believe Canada lost to Germany in the hockey Semis this morning. I watched the 3rd period and it was all Canada but falling behind by giving up 3 goals on 3 shots isn't going to help.

From the German Foreign Office:

"Travel advisory: Germans in Canada should exercise a high degree of empathy. Be nice, don’t gloat, give hugs, buy rounds of hot chocolate.

Just imagine how you would feel if Canada beat us in soccer 😱"

Reply from Foreign Policy Canada:

"Thanks @GermanyDiplo. Congrats on your first shot at gold!

We remember our first gold medal match in #IceHockey like it was yesterday… 1920 to be exact. "

The Olympics have been mostly great to watch and the U.S. team has done better than expected in many sports. Tip of the hat to the U.S. Men's Curling team for their gold medal performance against Sweden. Very soon back to normal hours and tasks. Glad to see no one seriously injured even though some of the half-pipe athletes tried.
