Default Orvis jacket material

I am posting this here because this site has members that are well informed in many areas. Years ago Orvis sold an upland hunting jacket and pants that were made of a waterproof super tough cotton material that was originally used for WWII RAF pilots to wear when flying over the channel in case of a bail out. I'm going back about twenty years since they offered it. It was crazy expensive, about 900 dollars for jacket and pants. The question; what was the material called? I cant find any of my old catalogs and the new ones dont offer it.

Waxed canvas?
Tin cloth?

I think they're both the same thing, but tin cloth is the proprietary name of the garments made by Filson

Look for Barbour jackets - waxed cotton. Looks like Orvis carries them.

I believe the name of the material started with a "V". Cannot google or locate info. Reason is I saw and outfit listed at an estate sale some distance away. Okay folks....search is over. Friend on facebook states product is called 'Ventile". Orvis no longer carries it but is available in G. B. Still about 700 dollars for the jacket alone. Now I have the name I can verify. thanks to all who tried.

Definitely "Ventile". I get the Orvis catalogs (sometimes a couple times a week), and I could have sworn ventile coats were included in a very recent edition. I even remember some of the ad copy, about Churchill being worried about the survivability of RAF pilots shot down over the Channel & ordering the development of a material that would keep them dry until a rescue boat could get to them.

Thats the stuff! After I got the name I was able to look up the history. Orvis states no longer available thru them. I will go see if the jacket is still at the sale.
