Default Martin CF-1 - wow!

Well, my wife and I went to the Martin factory yesterday and took the tour and checked out the museum.

I was able to go into the picking parlor to try out some really high end stuff. They had a Johnny Cash model, the Elvis model, HD-28VS, and several other really nice ones but the CF-1 archtop was the highlight for me (seconded by the Johnny Cash model sweet!!!)

I'm not that good at playing yet but the Archtop really had a great sound to it, not as much bass as say the HD-28VS that was there but the brightness and clarity was better then just about everything else I played that day.

It's the first archtop I've ever handled though so it may just be that all archtops have that sound to them but I liked it a lot.

I'm sure someone here has tried this guitar who has more experience then I do, was it just a first time archtop experience or is the CF-1 really as good as it sounded to me?

-Jim

I've never played one but they must be among the most beautiful guitars on the market.

I love the look. The sound was ok. The Solomon Archtop I had did circles around the Martin. When I did the tour I stumbled on the designer of the current CF's Dale Unger. Super nice fellow to chat with. He runs a class out of Nazereth on building your own archtop. The cost of the class is probaby cheap for the lessons learned, but pricey for an archtop.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the tour. I took it a few years ago and really enjoyed it.
