Default Pop Filter.....

Looking for a quality, reasonably-priced pop filter. Any suggestions?

The Stedman Proscreen XL is the best I've used. It's $70 but I think it's worth it. Zero plosives. The only drawback is you can't sing too close to it or you get a weird high end artifact. But as long as you keep your mouth 5-6 inches away, it's great.

....thanks, Jim.....wondering if pop filters also deflect air from a harmonica?......or would you install a wind screen on the mic?

We've got Popper Stoppers in all the rooms at our studio. Not fancy but they work great. I've got five or six of them in the mic closet in my room.

The Stedman Proscreen XL is the best I've tried. Just bought mine to replace a nylon fabric type pop screen. The Stedman controlls plosives better and gives slight improvement in clarity as compared with nylon fabric.

I also like that the gooseneck arm is easy to adjust and holds it's position well.

It might... but couldn't you just turn head of the harmonica player to so the wind isn't hitting the mic? I've recorded harmonica a bunch of times and didn't have any wind issues.

......I'm running a mic through a TC Helicon voice live GTX, with no pop filter, and playing harmonica produces a windy sound......I think I'll try one of the suggested pop filters first, and see if that works....thanks again.....

Think of a cone-shaped blast coming out of a person's mouth in the shape of a megaphone. Just move the mike out of the area of the megaphone but keep it on-axis. There shouldn't be a whole lot of blast coming out of a harp because the reeds diffuse it. By the way, the popper stopper is there so you don't have to put one of those awful foam windscreens over the mic like you do when you are playing live. The foam guys filter out high end where the popper stoppers don't.

By the way, take a close look at the pop screen and see if it doesn't look familiar. The original was created by an engineer and his wife. She took some pantyhose and stretched them over a cross-stitch hoop and he added the gooseneck and mounting hardware. Voile'! Couples ingenuity.

Thank you! There's a photo tour of the studio posted on the forum, HERE, if you are interested.

If you don't want to break the bank, this pop filter by Gator is what I've been using for a few months: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GMPOPFILTER
The $12 OnStage one I had had a really cheap plastic ring holding the screen material, it broke down near the area where it joins the gooseneck, and no amount of glue would keep it together.

You can pop a mic through a harmonica!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Holy Crap!

What mic are you using?

When you spend the extra bucks, part of what you get is better hardware.

There's a screw clamp on one end, a long skinny gooseneck, and a friction-fitted gimbal on the other. If those are cheap junk, they'll go south in a hurry and you'll wind up using rubber bands and duct tape to get the dang thing to stay put.

Spend the extra bucks.

.....I didn't say "pop"......I said "windy"....the GTX makes the mic really hot....for vocals, it works great....but harmonica air, or even whistling, will produce an annoying "windy" sound....and if a pop filter could redirect the flow of air....maybe that will help....
