I’ve been introduced to a lot of cool stuff right here on the AGF.

And sometimes PBS.
There's a show out of Columbus called "Songs at the Center" that showcases singer/songwriters ranging from the very well known to the not so well known. It's usual format is a small, intimate performer-and-guitar setting along with interviews with the artist(s). The problem I have with most public television stations is their random unpredictable programming schedule broken further by constant pledge periods. I had never seen or heard of this program while watching PBS broadcasts.. I found it on the PBS channel on my Roku. I believe there are episodes on YouTube too. Check it out. It's worth searching for. Last edited by menhir; 03-19-2018 at 08:13 AM. |

Music review blogs, suggested videos on YouTube after I watch something, friends and coworkers, online magazines, dubious file sharing sites (though I buy anything I like when found that way), Bandcamp, music on the PA system in the office bathroom (true story), music playing at the record store.
I've never in my life found a new artist I liked on the radio.

Pandora, Slacker internet radio, Community radio stations, NPR tiny desk concert, random surfing on YouTube, it's a big world out there.

I recently got an Amazon Prime Music Unlimited subscription, similar idea to Spotify. I've found a lot of new music through using it's recommendations based on what I've already listened to. It's made me a lot more likely to try something than if I was buying the albums on its own. |

Hi, here in the UK (the centre of the Earth) Pandora isn't an option (in fact its a cheap jewelry site) and Spotify used to be good but it kept removing itself from my 'puter, so I don't bother with it anymore.
A mando player and tech that I know well listens to Mandozine Radio day and night and I'm listing to it now - pretty cool stuff. On YouTube : Tiny Desk, Folk Alley, BGS, KEXP (some) , Fretboard Journal, Liveandbreathing. These are some where I've found some of my favourite artists.

Another NPR show to check out: "All Songs Considered" with Bob Boilen.
Over years listening to this program, I have heard lots of great artists. Some have made it, some haven't, but Boilen has a great ear for talent. He also does the "Tiny Desk Concerts" as mentioned earlier in the thread. Rick

I find new artists almost exclusively by going to music festivals or house concerts.

I also use Pandora, internet radio, Merlefest, the AGF and old-fashioned, over-the-airwaves radio. But one other place I have found a number of new artists is at the Swannanoa Gathering. If you're lucky enough to go to the Gathering, or one of the many other music camps available, it's a wonderful source for learning about new artists. You get to meet them, talk with them, learn from them and, of course, hear their music throughout the week.

There are some good BBC specialist radio shows which are worth streaming on iPlayer if you're sat at a computer all day. Travelling Folk and Another Country on BBC Radio Scotland are excellent.

Lots of good suggestions here. Here's where/how I find new material/artists I like:
1.) YouTube shows, especially NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts 2.) Streaming music apps. Most have a feature where you play a song/artist you like and then there's a button/selection that says something like: 'If you like this artist, here's similar artists.' 3.) Podcasts, All Music Considered from NPR is a good one. 4.) Right here on AGF! Search for thread titles in the General section for something like 'Best new artists' or 'Favorite acoustic players or groups'. You might have to experiment. Another good search is threads where people ask to 'Post your setlist' as that usually gets a lot of posts and I typically then take the names from those of artists I don't know and do a quick YouTube search. |

I will listen to what my friends post on Facebook because the majority of them have really good tastes. In addition, I'll listen to what my band mates are listening to as well. |
