Needed; a simple lick, or riff ..
I am lick, riff, stupid.
I've been working on scales, chords, finger picking.. on and on .. Figured it was time I started into licks, and riffs.. I did some u tube looking, the players seem to go too fast, and I got frustrated. Can you give me a couple of very, very very simple licks.. and riffs.. Just a get started kinda thing.. Get me going.. Thanks..

A riff can be practically any short series of notes that is repeated within a song. Like a hook, it can tie parts of a piece together, but a hook tends to be more essential and extended (a phrase with a melody line and/or chord sequence and that is an essential part of the song). A lick is like a riff but may occur just once in a song.
Here is an example of a little lick I use in one of my tunes: -3--5--3--------------------------------- -----------4--5--------------------------- -----------------5--0--2--0-------------- ------------------------------1--2-------- -------------------------------------3----- -------------------------------------------

A riff is a musical phrase repeated over and over, Think "Day Tripper" by the Beatles or any number of ZZ Top songs, "Sharp Dressed Man" "Tush" etc.
A lick is a short phrase, usually one or two bars long, used in phasing a lead. Here is video I grabed at random from Youtube containing a couple of standard blues licks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NN5YVCIkh4 Blues |
