I don't like turbos, but I recognize that it is an unrealistic prejudice. In the future, all high performance cars will be turbos, and then, eventually turbo diesels. The fuel pump problem was specifically with the BMW N55 engine (the Turbo 6 that BMW put in everything from the 135i to the 535i). I believe the 550 gets the N63 which is the turbo 8. Still I know people with N55 engines that are on their 3rd high pressure fuel pump. What really scares me is that BMW itself can't pinpoint the problem, which makes me worry about the N63.

Hyundai makes good cars and the Genesis is a heck of a bargain. Down market slightly more, the Veloster is pretty cool. Neither the Genesis nor the Veloster go wheel to wheel with an Evo or an STi, but they hang nicely with Ford Focus ST, Mazdaspeed 3, Mini S, those sort of cars.

That's the sort of area I was looking at. The thing that caught my attention about the Genesis was it's smooth torque curve. It didn't have the jackrabbit feel of the turbo-4s, just smooth power all the way up the dial. It's also RWD, which is becoming more and more rare. But, the car in that price range that really caught my attention was the Subaru BRZ. Great looking and sensationally beautiful handling, but they forgot to put an engine in it.

I don't particularly care for any of those cars, but of the ones listed I'd rather take the Caddy.

I've been driving an E320 Wagon for 10 years (270,000 miles). Just a perfect car. So, I'll take the AMG. I just got a Lincoln MKS from "In-Law Auto Sales." It's nice, but no Mercedes.

The Mercedes or BMW. The others pale in quality, longevity, and resale.

I haven't bought an American car in a long time, had Jag and Beemer. I know more than a few people who had Mercedes and would never get another one, they lived in the shop, at least theirs did. Not nuts about Audi grills and looks count to me.

My buddy has 5 BMW's (surgeon) and I've driven his 550i and 650i convertible a few times, I am still leaning towards the CTS Vsport Premium. It bested the 550i in a few of the mags, has many of the new Corvette suspension goodies, 4.4 0-60 is fast enough for me, and now with herniated discs comfort is high on my list, and I like the idea of supporting our economy.

Tesla is the dark horse and I don't drive a lot of miles, plus Tesla has a pretty strong presence in Dallas, see them every day. I'm not on fire, like auditioning guitars I enjoy checking out new cars, we shall see.........

I know you're a bit of a car nut, all you docs are..........

If you get a chance try a CTS Vsport Premium, I don't care for the ATS or XTS or even the CTS coupe (different grill treatment). I really like the looks of the Vsport, better in person, and the suspension is really good.

I think you would be surprised, not that you would want one as a Beemer guy, but I think you would give props. Tried an S5 since this thread started, nice but it didn't scream take me home.......

I'm in a metallic grey rut my last few cars, this is metallic Phantom Grey.......

Rich,
You've already had the BMW & Jag experience, why not give the Caddy a try? I drove one and had a hard time finding fault with it.

My opinion probably shouldn't count because I'm still a muscle car guy!

I've seen those and have been tempted to take one for a spin. I may just have to. They definitely look amazing!

In 2000 I bought a new BMW 540i and I drove it until last Fall.

It had 126,000 miles on it when I sold it and looked/ran at least as good as when it was new. The only reason I sold it was the need for a 4WD SUV.

It was a fabulous car that only required it's normal maintenance servicing. I'd buy another one without hesitation.

Agreed. I'm an admitted BMW addict. I have an E30 M3 track car with well over 250k on it. Loads of mods mind you, tons of parts have been replaced, but the chassis is still like day one and the motor is very strong.
I also have an E90 M3 as a summer daily driver. She's only got 38k on it but is still showroom new feeling.
My wife has an F25 X3 with 50k on it and it's also a fantastic running car. Even with the dreaded hairdryer powered 4 banger.
I also have an E46 M3 that is in the midst of a track conversion. She has 150k and is still rock solid.
Taken care of and well maintained they will drive forever.
