When we first bough our home 15 years ago, we were within 1/4 mile of four empty corner lots. One was advertised to be a future grocery store. I really was very environmentally-minded and was looking forward to walking to the store and saving gas. The economy tanked and those lots sat empty. Now 2 of them have apartments going up right now, and the one that was supposed to be a grocery is still sitting empty.

In the heat (Phoenix), with poor bike lanes and sidewalks, I have to drive. Especially shopping for a family of four. They make it very difficult for people to use less gas.

Our condo is within 2 miles of everything we need except my job (which I am retiring from at the end of June). Our clinic, groceries, movie theater (the oldest and longest running in the Twin Cities, nicely restored), the government center, the attorney that did our wills and trust, the library, the police and fire station, etc, etc, etc. If we need to go further, we are right on the bus lines to go anywhere we might need. Most in our building typically sell one or both cars within a few months of retiring.

4 miles from a full on grocery store, 1 mile essentials (milk, bread, fuel, beer)

Before I moved to Flarridah... I was 1 mile from EVERYTHING!

3 grocery stores within 3 miles (two regional chains, one independent)
2 farmers markets within 5 or so miles
A bunch of farms for produce. (Asparagus should be in soon, if not already)
Including a great co-operative.
Food is always within reach in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
max

Surprised to see how many people are driving 10 or more miles for groceries.
I mile to closest local-area large supermarket. Within a 8 mile radius have 3 more of the same chain, 5 other chain supermarkets (including Whole Foods natural food store) plus a Supercenter Walmarts and 3 Supercenter Targets, 2 Home Depots, 1 Lowes ...
But despite all that, it's 20 miles or more to anything but a small M&P music instrument store.

I made the conscious decision more than 40 years ago to live in an urban setting, that being one of the reasons.
