"Lilly Creek" -Original acoustic...
Ok...been strumming a guitar for a while...new to Travis picking and really new at trying to sing. This is my first attempt EVER at writing a song. I thought Id give it a whirl....comments/critique welcome.

Wow, nicely done especially for a first effort. I like the dark tone of the piece. I wish the vocals were louder, but the feel is very good.

I think your voice is very "authentic," whatever that means. It's a story-telling voice that makes the listener want to hear the story. The sort of clip-clop simple rhythm goes with the story-teller vibe.
Nice song!

I appreciate the comments and thoughts very much....would such a performance get me through an open mic or singer/songwriter type of setting?
Again thanks. |

A couple of listeners on another (singing) forum thought I should try to capo up half/whole step...it might fit my voice better. Any thoughts concerning that...did it sound like I was in key/on pitch?

Great song, love it. I'm no singing expert at all, but yes you may want to capo 0.5-1 tone up. You sing fine and in key, but the capo can help to articulate the low notes better. Maybe you can also add some hammer-ons/trills and stuff like that to the guitar to make it a bit more interesting. Keep songwriting

Any other thoughts regarding whether this is a passable performance/on key?

First of all that is an outstanding "first song" effort. Nicely constructed and told. Your singing was pretty much on pitch (country blues singing doesn't require perfection) but it does sound as if you are at the very low end of your voice's natural range. Whether the song as you perform it might be improved by moving up a half or whole step is worth exploring. Keep in mind that your vocal delivery in the current recording has been well received by folks here and I agree it has an element of authenticity that might be lost if it were to become more sophisticated.
