Reverb or compressor
Does anyone out there use either of these effects pedals with their ACOUSTIC guitar?
I run my acoustic thru a LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI with an old Boss CE-2 chorus (light) now. Thinking of adding a bit more to the chain on occasion. I also have a Boss DD-20 GigiDelay and Boss RC-20 Loop station.

I use both a compressor and reverb. They are both rack mount units that reside at the board. I find that one setting works for everything in the set, unlike other effects like chorus, or flange, volume and the like. Just like on the infomerical. I set it and forget it max |

I use an RNC compressor and an Alesis Microverb. I'd rather play live with a missing string than without the RNC. I haven't seen a pedal type compressor that's good for more than getting a fat/sustaining electric gtr tone. Set carefully, the RNC levels an acoustic gtr's volume without squashing the sound.

I used to use a Chorus effect and sometimes Dig. Delay but for the past couple of years, I haven't after upgrading guitars. I like to get the most natural sound I can out of them plus my playing style does not require others. Now I only add a touch of reverb and that's it. I do run through a ParaDI for EQ purposes and feedback control.

I HAVE to have reverb. I don't mind using a compressor at all...it just has to have low noise to signal ratio.

Can you tell me what settings you typically use for compression? |

I'll have to look and let you know. I use a dbx 266XL on the PA. As a rule you start at 12:00 on the dials and go from there. Just setting all the knobs at 12:00 will tighten up your signal and while still sounding very natural. For my HD I know I use it to attenuate the low frequencies and gain the highs -- basically just to add the balance that some big old Martin Rosewood dreads are somewhat lacking. Tightening up that signal and flattening out all those spikes in the dynamic range allows me to get more overall gain. That helps when the lead guitarist's Peavy Bandit is cranked up on one side and the Bass player's Hartke is cranked on the other and all I have is a wedge. Here's a good tech sheet on compressors. Follow this link http://www.alesis.com/index.php?id=56,30,0,0,1,0 and click on the 3630 referencve manual. At the end of the manual is a technical description of compression, limiting, and gating. max |

Keep going, please....
I would like to see this thread continue.....I am very curious about this very topic.
I am looking to play with my sound, and not sure where the investment is going to be: an Aura, Mama Bear, or continue to use the effects route. I currently use a Boss Chorus Ensemble, Boss Compressor and Aphex Acoustic Exciter. |
