Ryosuke-san, very beautiful work! I really like both the fretboard and the 5-piece back. Your fretboard process was really nice for showing how the very complex looking fretboard broke down into a number of fairly straightforward steps.

For your back, it's hard to tell, but it looks like it was laminated with the Yellow Cedar to make a flat back plate. I assume it will have a radius when braced. Was there any consideration for laminating it in a radius dish to achieve the back radius that way? I suppose this would require a vacuum bag to achieve.

Thanks for taking the time to post these detailed pictures and descriptions of this build. Very interesting!

Thank you for your kind words Mr..

Actually I laminated the boards on a radius dish.
As you know epoxy gets really hard once it gets dried and I don't wanna glue the back braces with stress(tension? forcibly?).
So the back is keeping nice and even arch after the lamination.

I didn't use the vaccume laminating system since I was afraid of that the low viscosity epoxy penetrate through the inner layer.
The outside of the AYC inner layer will be a glueing surface(of center seam, back braces and liners) and I didn't want any panetrated epoxy on it.

Well...Sorry about my poor English.
I hope you got what I meant...

Ryosuke-san,
There is no need to apologize for your English. Very easy to understand your concise explanations. Impressive work, very beautiful, and obviously well thought out. I hope you will keep us posted with your progress, both in words and photos. When I see the back glue up photo it immediately brings the Great Storm on Jupiter to mind. Curious as to what neck material and neck/body joint you have planned?

Very beautiful looking back you have made, Ryosuke-san!

Will your guitar have any bevels on it (arm, knee, chest)?

Thanks for your kind words Brad-san.
I've been in guitar making world only for 10 years so far but learned so many things from my great mentor, Sergei de Jonge and Kenji Sugita.
They always told me "why" they did in that way, with that grain orientation, with what tool or machine, with what kind of glue...etc.
One of the most important thing of guitar making is to focus on the structural integrity.
I haven't decided yet what neck material I use but probably some kind of mahogany or spanish cedar with Yanase Cedar something. I might make an elevated fingerboard neck.
The neck joint is traditional dovetail as always.

Ryo

Thank you very much Scott-san.
My options of bevel thing is basically only chest bevel.
The reason is that I tune top and back by chladni method.
To get a good result the lower bout of the board has to be symmetry.
If I put a block or wider lining inside of the body to make arm bevel or rib rest the lower bout becomes asymmetry.
Here's what I do during tuning top and back.

"Before and After tuning this back."

Default Making the sides of "Yanase Cedar Project"

The figured wood I use for this project is extreme hard to be bent.
Here's my approach.

I decided to make multi piece sides.

The pieces on the edges will be great support when I bend the sides.
They will be gone when I install bindings.

Slicing.

Now I got a set of book matched multi piece sides.

Of course I'm gonna laminate the sides.
From left to right, 1.8mm(≒0.07") port orford cedar inner layer, 0.6mm(≒0.025") macassar ebony middle layer and 1.8mm(≒0.07") Yanase cedar show side.

Bending...

Bent!
The 0.6mm(≒0.025") macassar ebony middle layer is flexible enough not to be pre-bent.

This is my side laminating mold and cauls.

Laminating...

Done!

Thank you very much for taking your time for reading this thread.

Thank you very much David-san.
This is just the beginning.
The show sides will be even busier later, haha.
Stay tuned!

Thank you very much Paul-san.
I'll study English more so that I can go to the shows in the U.S..
I'm gonna bring this guitar with me to see my grand mother in Kochi prefecture where this wood grew up once it's completed.
Thanks again!
Ryo
