Default "Stereo mix" not working

I'm not sure whether here or open Mic is the best place for this.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop operating under W8. It has a Realtek soundcard that displays "Stereo mix" under recording options. However, I've tried all the standard options, default, enable, etc, but it won't record digital audio such as Youtube or WMP to sound editing software such as Audacity. It flatlines, no input at all. I have no problem with this on my PC with W7. Is there a fix, or can anyone recommend audio capture software to do this?

The microphone recording device works fine, and you can, in fact, record to Audacity by connecting the headphone out to the mic in, but the result is very rough.

Do you have a W8 compliant software driver for the interface?

I downloaded the latest Realtek W8 drivers, but I've no idea whether that is sufficient in my case. I'll have another look.
