Default Local "picking" score...

I picked an old shuttered music store the other day, not much there but did score some cool memorabilia...

Pickers are folks who go around and buy cool old stuff. There's a show on the History channel called "American Pickers" about it.

I remember the first time I watched it, I saw it coming on on the channel guide, got my acoustic out and tuned it up, and I was all ready to do me some pickin'.

That's fascinating to see that advertising stuff from when I was about 14... I sometimes think it would be cool to go back to a simpler time, but 1962 wasn't simpler. It was just different. I was sure a lot younger then, however...

Another definition of “picker” is someone who scouts antique stores and estate and yard sales on behalf of their various collector clients who can’t or don’t want to spend all their time hunting for stuff. One picker may be working for collectors of several different specialties: ephemera, music, pens, jewelry, “smalls,” furniture, books, records, etc.

A lot better term for these proclaimed pickers would be "scout". Larry McMurtry wrote a fun book about such a "scout" called, "Cadillac Jack".....

I enjoy looking at catalogs from my feckless youth.....

Actually, I first heard the term “picker” on a fountain pen collecting listserv--the big shot collectors (the “Sumgai”s who always seem to land the rare stuff like pristine Waterman Patricians or Parker Black Giants or Aztecs) use them all the time, especially since they have high-powered jobs with workaholic hours.

OK, yes I like the American Pickers show.
Must be more difficult when the show is shuttered?

I've heard the term "pick" all my life , only recently used by the advent of the TV show I guess...Someone would have stuff for sale and the term used back would be " let me pick through it and see what I want", or " Can I pick over it?" etc. etc. Personally I make calls , look over the internet, still look over newspaper ads etc.etc to find places to go and "pick over" to see if there is anything I want to buy ..... These items even though they are not "rare" by any means were worth saving as they were heading to the trash pile .

I just used the term "picked" because I stumbled an old music store being renovated and walked in and asked if there was anything I could make an offer on to purchase, left a lot of old chip cases, band instrument cases and things I didn't have any use for but rummaged through the old file cabinets and came home with a few boxes of old price guides and dealer rep stuff.

I pick up stuff for our local second-hand store. I collected an old cupboard the other day and under one of the drawer liners was a store advertising poster from the early 60s. It was in mint condition! That is about the only significant "find" of late.

Thanks. That is what I meant. I was confused on how to pick a closed store.

I just got lucky driving through atlanta and went by an old music store that was being gutted...Luckily I was able to save several boxes of catalogs and other items before the "crew" donated them to the nearby dumpster...

Always great to have the actual history of whatever guitars. When my wife and I are out looking in antique stores, I will always pick up these just because of the pictures of the guitars and details from when they were first released.
