Short scale, 1.75" nut, $750 or less?
Apologies in advance for what is probably a frequent topic, but everything I found in the archive is old enough that there may be newer choices out there.
I'm considering picking up a new guitar specifically for learning fingerstyle. Right now one of the Seagull Mini Jumbo models seems to be my best bet, but I'd like to see what else is out there. My budget is limited to $750 at the most, less would be better. I'd prefer a cutaway and really don't care for dreads. Short scale and 1.75" minimum nut is essential. Suggestions?

Check out the Recording King RO guitars. 000 body, short scale, dovetail neck, bone nut and saddle, and available with Solid top or all-solid construction, mahogany or rosewood, and various levels of aesthetic adornments.
Nice guitars. |

Pretty much all Seagull models from Entourage up through the Maritime series fit your description. As long as the cutaway is negotiable, you can get an Entourage, a Coastline, or a Maritime with those specs at that price or under. Check that ... Entourage is a smaller 1.72 inch nut. Still wider than average.

do you need the cutaway? it will limit you as most will be acoustic electric, which means less money into the actual guitar itself. that, combined with the 1 3/4" nut, will limit your choices. used larrivees are an option as you might actually score a cutaway and short scale with the 1 3/4" nut that way.
the recording kings i've played don't have a short scale. entourage seagulls,. btw, don't have the wider nut that most seagulls have. http://www.seagullguitars.com/specs.html |

See if you can find one of these:

You're right about the Entourage Seagull .. 1.72 inch nut rather than 1.80 for other Seagulls. Wider than average, but not 1.75 he was after.

I'm pretty sure that new Norman's have a 1.72 inch nut rather than 1.75 ... Today, Godin manufactures their entire line across all models with either the 1.72 or the 1.80 unless you get a 12 string or the Peppino D'Agostino signature model Segull Artist with a 1.9 inch nut. The difference between 1.72 is small, but still significant.

Seagulls 1.8 nuts are the exact same size as any 1 3/4" nut. The measurements were just converted weird.

Recording King RO-10.
It is all solid wood, 1 3/4" nut width, 24.9" scale. I bought one at Elderly Instruments last September for $350/delivered! A delightful little guitar that has become my at work/office guitar, but, it's so much fun that I take it home over the weekends. ...not a cutaway, though. Good luck, Russ

I should probably find a local Recording King dealer and check them out. That Norman ST-40 folk is appealing to me, too - I have a thing for slotheads.

Agree on the Recording Kings. I have an RO-26, all solid 24.9 scale 1 3/4 nut. Bone nut and saddle. It's a pleasure to play.
