Default The "why would you use that?" thread...

I was using a couple of my tools, and it got me thinking why others use less-efficient tools to perform the same task. This thread is not meant to bash any tools, it's more meant to help others find tools to help make their lives easier. I'll start it off with this for string winding:

Why would you use this?

When you could use this in a common drill to make string winding so much quicker!

I do have one of those electric screw driver things for string changes, but unless I were assembling a lot of guitars, I still prefer the old human powered device, which for me is just as quick. Not being "green" here, more of an "if it ain't broke" kind of thing.

I have the hand winder, but a while back Musician's friend sold me a motorized string winder for around half price about 5 years ago. This is all I use. It seems that to use your drill to attach the peg fitter would require so much more effort.

These are nice.

Because I don't want to get a drill out, and charge it, or plug it in to wind my strings, when the black thing is sitting there in my guitar bag?

That ain't quicker.

I also prefer the hands_on approach. Using an auto-winder would detract from the ritual of replacing your strings.

Fazool, this is exactly what I use, and not my drill motor.

Unless I was changing strings all day long, I just don't see the point of an electric winder. Heck, it was only a couple of years ago that I finally got a manual winder. I can't imagine an electric winder saving me time, and I'd rather not have to worry about charging it or plugging it in.

And, if I'm going to a jam or a gig, I'm not going to haul an electric drill with me, much more convenient to toss a hand winder in my case.

I use the manual version, because it fits in my guitar tool box. The toolbox that nobody but me uses. So, it's always in there.
I'd have to find the drill. Find an extension cord, move a piece of furniture to plug in....go back and find the cord with the three prong end....

It may be old school to do it by hand, but it's only a hassle if I'm doing all the guitars at one time.

Another electrical/battery device to carry around, charge, plug in etc.

I have one of those planet waves doohickeys which has string cutters, winder and bridge pin puller all in one. Much easier doing string changes when you only need that and the neck support, both of which fold up and fit in my pocket or gig bag easily.

Besides, every time I try and use a drill to screw/unscrew something, I invariably set the rotation the wrong way or overtighten or the drill slips and gouges the object I am working on...

I don't carry a drill in my acoustic cases but I do have a few string winders, and spare sets of strings, in some cases.

Why not just use this? Portable, reliable, efficient, fast, easy to find:

I have a Planet Waves winder, which is a manual winder with both pin puller and string cutter. I think you'd be up a creek if the battery went! Plus it's useless unlless you have a dedicated drill for the job. I can't fathom using my Mikwaukee 18V brushless motor drill, with 750in-oz torque at 2400rpm!
