Yeah, I realized I had actually liked the Yamaha stock in some ways. The stock strings had a certain tonal vibe.

Default D'Addarios

They are very bright strings, and are probably best suited to solid rosewood guitars, and only then after a week or so, after the brightness has toned down.

The John Pearse strings are good, but I have yet to get a good set of phosphor bronze - they arrived DOA. Others like them. I did get a fresh set of 80/20 'New Mediums' and they were very fine. But I would caution you off 80/20s if the guitar is new and bright-sounding.

With the Yamaha, I would encourage you to find warmer-sounding strings. The Martin SP's are quite warm, as are the DR Rares, and the DR Pre-Alloy strings. Long ago D'Addario made a "Great American Bronze" 85/15 string, which was a very mellow and good set, but no more. GHS makes "Vintage Bronze" - also in 85/15 but it seems that the regular GHS offerings lack the quality they once had. I think they are around $5.00 so you might want to try them, if your guitar seems too bright-sounding.

I use Yamaha FS50BT strings on my Yamaha LL16 and love the sound of them. Tried EJ16s, Nanowebs and Newtones, but have always come back to the Yamaha strings.
The only problem with them is their scarcity and their cost. I only know of one shop in the UK that sells them, the main Yamaha dealer in London, and they charge more than they do for Elixirs.

EJ16s are my current favorite. I have a set of DRs to try out next. Also, if you like the stock strings, TaylorGrl pointed out a while back that you can buy those from Kraft Music:

Have I noted tonal variance among FG700S guitars? Yes.

Also I think playing style, the type of music you play matters when it comes to string choices.

The bottom line: I still can't believe how much juice I can squeeze out of this "cheap guitar."

Yamaha have shipped their guitars with the these strings for a couple of years now.

http://www.thomann.de/gb/yamaha_fs50bt.htm

They're coated strings and last quite a while, which is just as well, because Yamaha don't market them very well, they're as rare as hen's teeth.

FYI. I don't know what Stings came with the guitar (I suppose I could visually compare them with the below).....Having said that, these are the extra strings that came with the FG700S bundle.........

************************************************** ********

(2) Yamaha FG12 - Two Sets of Acoustic Guitar Strings
Extra strings are a necessity when playing guitar. Depending on how much you play, you will want to change strings every 1-2 months. Our COMPLETE GUITAR BUNDLE has you covered with your first two replacement sets. The These strings are a light gauge for easy playability, while retaining a full, bright tone. (sells separately for $7.98)

Mine's a 1974 FG700S and over the years I've used almost every make at one time or another.

It's got Elixir Light Nanowebs on it at the moment and it sounds good to my ear.

The store I bought my FG700s from recommended the EJ16 or the Martin SP 80/20....I've tried them both and my untrained/beginner ears and fingers really can't decide which ones are better for me yet.

Note: on ebay a 3-pack of the EJ16s costs about the same(shipped) as I paid for one set of the Martins at this store. For now, that may be my deciding factor.

Yeah, I've kept the original Yamaha strings on my FG720S for almost a year. I'd probably buy more but I was told by a Yamaha dealer that the strings are not available for purchase. I may try some DR Rare Mediums (actually 12-54) next, or maybe some GHS Vintage Bronze.
