Default Magic Myrtlewood

First of all, I consider every guitar in my collection a keeper. I love them all for different reasons. Lately I've been playing my 2003 Taylor Pelican with increasingly pleasant surprises. I liked it when I bought it new for its very woody sound. These days, I enjoy the fact that it seems to combine the more desirable elements of rosewood, mahogany and maple in its overall tonal response. It's a wonderful performance guitar when plugged in, cutting through the mix like maple with the breathiness of mahogany and the smoothness of rosewood. And it's very pretty too:

I know that there aren't too many around, but treat yourself to a test drive of a myrtlewood guitar if you get the chance. It's got a vibe all its own!

Wow!! What a gorgeous looking guitar!
With your tone description, I am very much interested in myrtlewood.
But it is very difficult to find one in stores.
Would you mind sharing a sound clip or two?
Thanks.

The recordings I have of this guitar would not help unless I had identical recordings of the same body shape and top. Most of the soundclips I hear on this forum don't necessarily provide a distinctive tone of the guitar being played. For example,if I close my eyes and listen to a recording (even in good headphones), it can be difficult to identify the back and sides wood, because so much of tone is influenced by build and the top tone wood.

That said, my observations of the live tonal quality of this guitar have been confirmed by other guitar playing listeners. Your best bet would be to audition a Breedlove guitar with myrtlewood, as Taylor seldom uses this wood while Breedove is a more regular user. (Only 63 Taylor Pelicans were produced). Here's another shot:

I totally agree with you. While mine is not a Taylor, I have a myrtlewood dreadnought made by luthier Tim Metcalf in TN. Here's mine:

So nice to see other myrtlewood guitars out there. Maybe we should have our own forum!

Looks as if it may have sold - couldn't find it on the website. Here's another shot just for fun!
