Default looking for names (of quality songwriters)

It s been only 2 years since I started playing guitar and I got used to playing the guitar through good and bad times and ever since I started playing I have been exposing my ears to some music of mostly guitar players. Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Django Reinhardt, Fapy Lafertin etc. But (Im only 20 years old) I havent really listened to many songwriters or bands or stuff like that. I know that might probably sound like blasphemy to you but I havent heard many Beatles songs either. I was thinking hearing songwriters songs might help me develop better expression of myself. I remember hearing Brian s cover of Its too late by Carole King here in the show and tell section and I was like oh my days what a killer song! So I believe theese songwriters might enrich my musicality even without so much lightning fingers technique (which is just a cherry on the cake in my eyes).
So AGF, who are the great songwriters of our time?

Townes is considered by many the best songwriter to ever live. Personally I think Dylan has him beat, but not by much. Townes can really pick a guitar. Steve Earle is a great songwriter as well. These days I listen to a lot of Todd Snider. He is a hilarious/serious songwriter. The stories he tells are almost as good as his songs.

A second nod to Rodney Crowell, my favorite singer/songwriter for many years.

A close second is Russell Smith, who was the lead singer/songwriter for the Amazing Rhythm Aces.

Chris Hillman, of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Desert Rose Band, Rice Rice Hillman & Pederson, pens some great tunes...

As did his long dead bandmate - Gram Parsons.

More and additional kudos to Townes, Clark & Kristofferson....

And lest we forget (Maybe I missed it) - Willie Nelson!

Hm.. Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, etc.

I'm not sure how much I can stress the importance of Lou Reed's songwriting. He doesn't seem to have much of a following here on the forum, likely because he doesn't correlate with acoustic music much at all - But man, he could write a song - the king of New York! I'd consider him in the top four or five defining songwriters of rock and roll in the twentieth century.

Oh, and you mentioned 'our generation' - so it's worth mentioning some younger acts since none have been, yet. Jack White can really write a great song, 'Lazaretto' was a great exhibit of that this year. I also think Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys is an exceptional songwriter - they really have some very strong lyrics. I saw a young guy in concert last week, Mac DeMarco - he's got something special. He's young, and has one album right now that seems to be igniting huge for him, but he has the potential to turn into a strong songwriter.
