I like my guitars set up with the high E offset in slightly more than the low E. I think it's a natural tendency to curl the fingers into the palm. Also with radius boards the edge slopes that way which may cause that high E to roll that way. There are some two handed techniques that having the extra space may be helpful. I do try to keep the string parallel to the edge as close as possible when I bind the fretboard.

Allows using pull vibrato on the high E and thumb wrap on the low E.
