AGF Classifieds...
Earlier today I posted a WTB: OM-28V in the classifieds. Just a minute ago I receive a PM from someone I've never seen on AGF who has 0 posts saying he has a "sunburst" OM-28V he's willing to sell. Really?!? Maybe he's legit but I gotta pass.

Good question. I would have if I were looking for one. Might be a great opportunity to score a deal on a very nice guitar.

Yeah, you never know, I sold one thru the AGF classifieds to someone that was not a member here. He was great to deal with. I think a lot of non members scan the classifieds here. I know I do on other sites. Usually can get a pretty good feel with a phone call....

What's the problem, you posted a want ad and someone responded. Isn't that how it works?

Gotta agree with Jim here. One of the first things I check is post count, followed by location, and some of a potential buyer/seller's AGF responses or initiated past threads. If you don't have sufficient 'street cred' or I get a weird vibe, don't expect a response.

I suppose I could have responded but a 0 thread count sure sends a red flag in my book. Maybe I was too cautious? On the other hand I have a dialogue started with another forum member who may want to move his...it's a "wait and see" sort of scenario?

I'm happy it worked out for you John. I think selling one to a "non-member" is a little different than buying one in the reverse order? And I'll go on record saying I have bought and sold on this forum many times without a hitch. It's a great place to buy and sell guitars!

Really?---yes.
A couple of things you can do is first, swap phone numbers. Always better if you can get a feel of the person's character by talking to them. Secondly, before I do a trade, I exchange photos of our Drivers Licenses. At least you know who they are and where they live. Lastly, I send an email that explains the terms of the trade. This way if it goes sour you have some documentation and at least have a chance to take it to the local police. This isn't foolproof by any means, but it's at least something. |

Yeah, I'd be careful with someone who had zero posts. Might be fine, but would need to find someway to make sure everything is legit.

No harm in opening a dialog with him to check things out. Besides asking for phone numbers and drivers license you could ask for pictures of the guitar from specific angles to verify he really has the guitar. You could also insist that he invoice you through paypal so you have leverage if you don't receive what you expected.
Just my two cents.
