Default NGD Applegate SJ redwood over walnut

I had been on the hunt for an Olson, but couldn't justify the pricing especially since I had almost ten other guitars floating around.

So I started looking for those that built the SJ body, and perhaps in a wood combination I didn't already have. Josh Isaacs (JJI) directed my attention to a Brian Applegate SJ at Mighty Fine Guitars in California.

The size is basically standard SJ, and the topwood is sinker Redwood with the back and sides being Bastogne Walnut. The neck is also laminated walnut. Great Gotoh 510 tuners, ebony knobs, and a Madagascar bridge and fretboard. I love the abalone rosette and am also happy about the K&k microphone pickup, so I can hope to play live again sometime soon.

Here are some of Josh's photos on Steve's background:

Congrats Matthew. That is certainly a beauty.

I have always wanted a Walnut guitar too. The closest I have is my latest purchase, a Fodera Standard 4 Fretless electric bass with a figured walnut top and walnut body. If I won the lottery, one of my dream purchases would be a Petros Tunnel 13.

Please let us know how you like the walnut/redwood combo.

Congrats, that's a nice one. I played it quite a few times at MFG, and there were some days it absolutely sang and I thought very hard about bringing it home--even though I've generally not liked walnut guitars. I'm glad it found a new home with an AGFer who can fully appreciate it!

Wow, that is absolutely gorgeous, MP! Really nice... I'd like to hear more about its sound when you have the time. Don't forget to stop looking at it every once in a while and play it...

Beautiful. His guitars don't get a lot of mention around here. But every time I see one it seems to strike a note. (Don't know why as I have never heard one.) Nice going! I like that...

Congrats, big fan of the walnut and the rosette. After I sell a couple, I think my next commission will be walnut as well!

I will do my best. Playability is as good as any high-end guitar I've owned, neck has a nice somewhat hefty carve that is very comfortable with my somewhat larger hands. Frets and setup, tuners are perfect.

Sound is very lush and different from any spruce/hog/rosewood guitar I own. I get a deepness and overtone with the redwood/walnut that sounds radically different from my other guitars, and I'm glad that it's so unique.

Right now I have it tuned down a full step, and it handles that extremely well. It does slap harmonics very well also, one of the best at that I've played, but not quite as good as the Baranik.

Overall, an excellent representation of a less common but very successful wood combination and a prototypical SJ volume, playability etc. I'm very pleased and it will hang around as long as I have the room (!).
