NGD - Jaguar
Strictly speaking, it's a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar. I bought it because:
1) I don't have any short-scale guitars 2) I don't have any guitars with functional wiggle sticks 3) I love the fact it has all those knobs and switches 4) I don't have any white guitars And you know what - this thing is a joy. It sounds and feels totally unlike anything else I own, and is worth every penny of its modest price. I can't find a flaw on it anywhere. I sense a matching Jazzmaster in my future...

And here it is, taking its place in my lineup of inexpensive guitars. Less than a grand for the lot of them, and I'd happily gig with any one of them.

Always liked Jags, definitely got that Al Jardine/Beach Boys vibe - now you need a blackface Twin, and a petite blonde with a surfboard and a '65 Corvette convertible, to go with it...
"Functional wiggle stick"...? - FYI this is a family-friendly forum... Seriously speaking, you might want to look into retrofitting it with the locking trem used on the higher-priced Jags - I understand they go for around $100 and make a world of difference in both tone and tuning stability... |

I'd love to put a Mastery bridge and vibrato on it, but that pair would cost more than the guitar
StewMac has a locking Jag vibrato for a very modest price; one of those may very well end up on it. I'd go for a Mustang bridge as well, which seems to be a fairly common mod, but StewMac's is 7.5" radius, and this guy is 9.5". Most likely, it will stay just as it is. Darn, it sounds good.

Looking good..... And it appears the rest of the family has accepted the new family member.

I have played Jazzmasters but never a Jag. I have a couple short scale guitars and enjoy them more the older I get. Nice group photo David. -- Darwin

Nice score!
I have always wondered: What do all of the switches do?

Now that I know, I can tell you
The Jaguar (and the Jazzmaster for that matter) have two discrete circuits. They are selected by the slide switch on the upper bout; when it's up, the neck pickup is selected, and its volume and tone is regulated by the two roller controls, also in the upper panel. This is the "Rhythm" circuit. When that switch is down, everything is controlled by the panel on the lower bout - the "Lead" circuit. There are on-off switches for each pickup, and the third is a bass-cut switch (the so-called 'strangle control') - and the regular volume and tone controls by the bridge do what you'd expect them to do. Jazzmaster is exactly the same concept, except that it uses a conventional three-way toggle for pickup selection, with no strangle switch.

For $299 and change, it's ridiculously good.
What's a little sad is that I had to buy it mail order (Musician's Friend, with their usual excellent service). None of the Guitar Centers in my area keep them in stock. A little variety beyond 73 variations on Strats and Teles might actually help them.
