I would be happy to host a Somogyi and apprentices guitars event. It would be good to do it after Leo Buendia's guitar has arrived and possibly Hiroshi Ogino's too (due to be started soon).

I would certainly attend that if possible, and lug along a Kostal.

Cheers,
Steve

I'm picturing something akin to Avengers: Assemble...

That'd be fantastic! I'd do my utmost to come along too, Kraut in tow.

Now, since someone said there must always be pictures... gratuitous close-ups of the fossilized ivory nut & saddle:

(those are escapee Hoffee hairs under the wound E string!)

The beautiful organic appearance is quite misleading: I expected an almost granular texture to these, but they're mirror smooth, and obviously (literally) rock hard.

Ray would have been equally happy using bone, the sonic advantages of ivory being debatable... I love the way this looks though!

interesting detail in the way the saddle is 'undercut' by different amounts on the front (soundhole) edge for string gauge compensation.
Also an interesting aesthetic of the nut with it's embrasure / merlons like form, I had a handmade Spanish guitar decades ago which was the same traditional nut design.

I hadn't realised that WAS a traditional nut design! I've only seen that scalloped nut on Somogyi guitars, or those made by his apprentices: Ervin doesn't refer to it specifically in The Responsive Guitar (the scalloping that is) - he seems to focus more on the material, and compensation.

Granted though, my main interest is the more modern flat-top steel string guitars... I know next to nothing about traditional Spanish luthiery, or classicals.

The intonation of this guitar is spot on, everywhere, so what compensation there is is working perfectly!

I delighted to announce that am going ahead with the Legendary Luthiers event. It will be a meet for owners of Somogyi and his apprentices guitars and Ray will be coming. 31st October. I will start a new thread soon.

Mines scalloped too! -hi5- but yours is so much more beautiful in FMI! Love the textured look. I hope you're enjoying your new found love!

Really sad to say I can't make this... It'll be a great night for whomever is going, I know...

Thanks guys

It's everything I'd hoped for and more... truly an exquisite musical instrument.
