Default Ballpark Value of a 1970 Les Paul Delxue

Hi Friends!
First post here in the electric section. An acquaintance of mine asked me if I know anything about electric guitars. I told him I don't but I know a good place to start!

He just inherited a 1970 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe and wants to know roughly how much it is worth. He said it has sentimental value and he has no plans to sell but wants to know the value so he can decide if he needs to do anything insurance-wise with the guitar.

He said the guitar is in mint condition and sent me these photos:

Any info anyone could provide would be great.

Thanks!
Matt

Chicago Music Exchange has a few advertised on their site. He (or you) could get an idea about current value there.

$2-4k is a good ballpark figure based upon what I see there. It being in mint condition might bring just a tad more.

Thanks Tom!
That's perfect!

I had suggested he get in touch with Willies American Guitars in St. Paul, MN and/or Dave's in La Crosse, WI. But that was before he said he was going to keep it and just wanted a general idea. I figured at first that he was interested in selling it.

Thanks again!
Matt

vintage guitar price guide indicates for excellent conditon, $4-5000. depending upon the overall condition, it may sell for $3-4000 street. i'll bet it is a great sounding guitar as it sure looks fantastic.

play music!

Tell your friend to go to ebay and buy a nice late 60s-early 70s original "faultless" case for his guitar to increase the value. You can snag a clean one for around $300 Buy It Now if you are patient. But don't ditch that Univox case - it protects the guitar better than the Gibson case. How do I know?

The aluminum rails are the give-away that it is a Univox.

Not a dime less then 3500$(Id say more towards 4200$) Gold Tops are a little more desirable in certain circles.

Beautiful Lester you have there.

You'd have people lined up at 2500 all day long. Sell it at that price, and somebody will flip it to the right buyer for 4500.

If the pots, tuners and everything is all original, somebody might even pay 5k plus.

All original near mint ~45 year old guitars are rare.

Hi everyone!
Thanks again for all the info!

I kept sharing posts with the fellow that inherited the guitar and he basically told me he has all the info he needs!

I thought he might benefit from and enjoy learning as much as possible about the guitar he acquired but he's not a guitar guy at all (has never played) and I guess doesn't understand the passion we have for these instruments.

He said again that he's not planning to sell it and inheriting it may inspire him to learn to play which is pretty cool.

Thanks again!

There's a huge price difference between the '69s and the '70s, so I'm not sure you could get $5k, but if any is worth that money, this one is. The condition is primo and the parts appear to be original. Many of the old Deluxes had the bridge pickups replaced by full-size humbuckers in the '70s, and many also had Grovers put on in place of the Klusons. They are great guitars.

Is it a pancake body (2 slabs) & is there a volute (hump) on the back of the neck? 3-piece neck w/ large hdstk? These were usually pretty hefty LP's.

Like fuman said: there's a huge difference between a '69 & a '70. '68 & '69's are worth considerably more $$...!

Pancake LP
