Tyrannosaurus Rex
Does anybody like, or has anyone liked, this duo? When I was 13 years old my brother bought a double album reissue of the Marc Bolan/Steve Peregrine Took, and later Marc Bolan/Mickey Finn duo that made up Tyrannosaurus Rex. I loved their music then and I love it now. If you've never heard it, I can guarantee you'll find it at once very strange and very catchy. Marc Bolan, playing acoustic guitar and singing against a varied background of bongos and bells is certainly one of the most original sounds I've ever heard. Bolan's voice is highly distinctive, the words to the songs are bizarre, and the melodies haunting. Marc Bolan morphed into the pop band T Rex, of course, and became something very different. But his early Tyrannosaurus Rex material is, in my opinion, unique and undervalued.
Reason I'm sounding off about this? My brother bought me the complete reissues of Tyrannosaurus Rex albums for Christmas. I've got a whole load of those wonderful songs in my head right now! |

Congrats on the collection. I love going mining for old stuff. I'll admit that I've never heard the pre-T Rex Bolan stuff. Is any of it on YouTube or such? Ican't identify any that aren't labeled T. Rex.

Marc Bolan...
I recently heard "Jeepster" playing. After not having heard it for many years, I was resurrected to listening to Marc Bolan! He's who recently inspired and motivated me to pick up my guitar and finally LEARN!

Yeah. I remember being a fan, way back when... I had all of (both ?) the albums.
It's one of those "guilty pleasure" things. I can remember "hating" Marc when he "sold out" by going electric... Judas ! "Tie a yellow mini round the old oak tree" that was his swansong. Last edited by Long Jon; 08-30-2014 at 03:46 AM. Reason: Drunk punctuation last night... I'm almost sober now. |

They were quirky and funky, and the girls (and the music press) loved Marc. then he disappeared from my awareness until he turned up on Top of The Pops. Then of course his girlfriend put their Mini Cooper into a tree in Barnes - and that was it. |

I was 12 years old when Marc Bolan's more commercial band, T Rex, had a big hit with a song called Hot Love. This was the first single I ever bought, and I remember my father shaking his head in mock disgust in the days after I bought it: "Hot Love!" he'd say, to the tune of "How pathetic!" It was a joke, and I laughed along with it - thing is, I'd always listened to classical music up to this point, and this was my first venture into being a young kid who was a part of his generational era.
But it was a year later, when my older 15 year old brother starting buying 'freaky' records that I heard what Marc Bolan had been up to before he went pop. Our bedrooms were adjoining, and I used to draw a lot in mine, listening to his music through the wall. Anyway, although Tyrannosaurus Rex was just about the strangest music I'd ever heard, I loved it. It's so good on a number of levels. First, it's striking just what a great songwriter Bolan was. His songs were short, but each had a very distinctive and appealing melody. Then there was his voice, which again was unique and had great range. When Steve Took was with him for the first few albums - the best ones, in my view - you also got terrific vocal harmonies and great hand percussion. It's all a big treat for the ears! |

I do name-check one of their hits in a satirical song of mine, “They Don’t Write ‘em Like That Anymore."
